Honza Cervenka: Aronian plays this very bad. After 32...Ke8 or 32...Kd8 white's task would be technically much more difficult. Now it's over. I would win it without troubles.

Tomlinsky: Wely has messed this up.

Honza Cervenka: <plang: 34 h5 looks pretty strong.> Be more careful, my friend. 34...Bxg4 and if 35.Bxg4, then Rh1+ and Rxa1

But fortunately van Wely can see dirty little tricks like this one.

Honza Cervenka: 38.Rh5?? What a pity for VW! 38.Bf3 and black could have resigned...

  Tomlinsky: 38.Rh5. Quack Quack Ooops!
Jan-24-07  Stevens: oooh, that's harsh

Honza Cervenka: <38.Rh5. Quack Quack Ooops!> It is really bad for poor Loek to fall in last and only cheap trap in clearly and easily won position. But this game shows that GMs are just imperfect humans like we are.

Tomlinsky: <Honza> I must ashamedly admit there is a part of me that is saying "Thank god, it isn't only me!" because I just want to go outside and punch a tree whenever I do what just happened. :)
Jan-24-07  Sami Jr: Just got back and saw a draw. Wow! I was expecting 1-0. What good way to trap White's bishop in moves 38 and 39. Aronian got a two for one trade to equalize and draw the game. Nice end game play by Aronian.
Jan-24-07  hitman84: Ouchy douchy that must have hurt, poor Loek.

  tamar: Highway robbery!

Going backwards, you can see Aronian had the trap in mind with 36...Rh1+ positioning the rook to sack itself, and then 37...f6, hoping, hoping...

38 Rh5??? Rxd1+

Jan-24-07  jhoro: at least van Wely can go back and cry in Marion's lap. according to Komsomolskaya Pravda http://www.chessbase.com/newsdetail... Kramnik seems to be set too. and who does Toppy go to when he loses! that must suck... oh wait. that's why he tries so hard to win
Jan-25-07  Whitehat1963: Clever finish and good puzzle after 38. Rh5.
Jan-26-09  arsen387: One of the best swindles I've ever seen. Bravo Aronian.

Another great resource found by Levon in a lost position is Shirov vs Aronian, 2008, also a draw.
