ray keene: thanks for the compliment -however i first saw this way of playing for black in the game horberg-botvinnik stockholm 1962 where botvinnik played 10...Bg4 instead of my ...Bg7. however, i had already been using the ..gxf6 variation in 1961-but obviously without the insights provided by the botvinnik game.before this game i had always experienced difficulties with black against nick patterson, but this variation seemed to provide a complete answer to the problems posed by his style at that time. nick of course went on to be a high board player for cambridge university , then won the irish championship and played top board for ireland in the 1970 siegen olympiad where he drew a famous endgame against bent larsen.i think nick has won more games against me than any other british player ever has!

ray keene: losses to british players-i shd add that while at dulwich college i played a humungous number of games against john sugden, nigel kalton ( both of whom went on to win the british championship major open tournament) and graham sandiford-with whom i have lost touch-and they all won more games against me than nick patterson did-if anyone out there knows of the whereabouts of either graham sandiford or marcus phillips, both of whom played for dulwich and their cambrdige colleges, i wd welcome getting back in touch!
