  Sneaky: And so it ends.
Feb-18-07  Phoenix: Excellent struggle. Meanwhile, it looks like Chucky has Topalov on the ropes.
Feb-18-07  BadKnight: Which game we are going to see next?

Domdaniel: Draw. Hmph. Predicted that ages ago. And in such a dull, even position too.
Feb-18-07  popski: Yea, yea, Aronian is experienced man! Nice game!
Feb-18-07  WickedPawn: Here we go.. A nice draw...
Feb-18-07  ianD: I was right.

Carlsen proved he has what it takes.

Aronian played a prepared line and Carsen nearly did what Capa did to Marshall

Feb-18-07  chessmoron: Topalov-Ivanchuk PLZ
Feb-18-07  Moondoll: Too bad Carlsen couldn't save this one. Nice draw for Aronian though.

oao2102: What about Moro-Leko? all you French defense nuts out there...
Feb-18-07  vangogh228: I hate draws.
Feb-18-07  messachess: Somewhere in the world, they call this 'a real barn burner.'

tamar: Disappointing. One careless move ruined a great defensive conception.

Even in the final position, Black could play on for a win, but it is more practical to take a draw with no time to think.

Feb-18-07  mckmac: Still,a tremendously interesting and exciting game and a credit to both players.
Feb-18-07  Hoozits: This is not a forced repetition, is it? Did Carlsen offer the draw because of his time trouble?
Feb-18-07  Hoozits: 32.Qg4+,Ke8 33.Qg8+,Rf8 34.Qxe6+,Kd8 35....,

Now what? Why do I feel as though I am missing something?

Thanks in advance to anyone who can help me understand this position.

Feb-18-07  unsound: <Hoozits> Well, after your line white could just play 35.Bf6+ Kc7 36.Be5+ and at that point black might have to accept the repetition, since the rook at d7 has to be defended twice. 35...Rxf6 would just bring material back to even.
Feb-19-07  mistergore: dull,even position??? lol
Feb-19-07  percyblakeney: Carlsen got into too much time trouble, otherwise he would probably have found 27. ... Bg6 which looked very good to Shredder (more than 4 pawns up for black).
Feb-19-07  ianD: What a pity Rd7 is the move that loses the win.

Black could have chosen to play on by playing Ke8>d8>c7 but the position is unclear.

Aronian's "prepared line" was problematic for black but is fundamentally unsound.

On 1.5 points Carlsen has got off to a good start which will take some pressure of in his next games.

At Corus 2007 his bad start killed any chance he would have had.

This is all a learning exercise for Magnus and today was an important lesson. Opportunities to win games a few and far between at this level.

from his two mages in Mexico he has shown he can hold his own against the big boys. A steady tournament here will give him encouragement to take his chess game to the next level!

That's my hope too. After all his draw against Kramnik was not an accident. He can play with bigger confidence now. About the game I still don't understand why Aronian didn't play 19.e6! instead the speculative 19.e4? Is there a comment on? 19. ....fxe6 Nd3-Ne5-Ng4-Nh6 could mate of course Black has 4 moves to stop that. But after 21.Ne5 white couldn't be bad. Else on 19. ...Bxe6 20.NxBe6 QxNe6 21.Rd4 as 21. ...Bf6 there is 22.Qd3! with Re4 or Rad1 (QxBd4 threats Ra7 and mate)

Feb-19-07  Hoozits: Thanks, Unsound. That looks to be correct. It was far from obvious to me. Everyone was eagerly shouting, "Clear draw by repetition." I was at home thinking, "Now wait a minute..." Your continuation seems to be on the money. Thanks again. I just needed to keep looking. I guess I was expecting something simpler.
Feb-19-07  unsound: No problem--and yes, it was far from obvious to me too, honestly.
Feb-20-07  Atking: If White want at all price a Knight sacrifice then 19.Nd5 may be a better investissement.

acirce: <Surely a very exiting game, but Magnus was a bit unhappy about the result as he had a winning position for a long time. In the Catalan line Aronian chose the somewhat unusual 10.Nc3 and Magnus spent a lot of time trying to get out of the Lg2-pin against Nc6 and afterwards to activate his pieces. He gave back the pawn plus another one, and after 18….g5 he thought he was OK. Then Aronian sacked his night on f4 erroneously as he had missed the subsequent f5! Magnus spent a lot of time looking for something that could explain the sack but didn’t find anything. When Aronian offered a draw after 23.Qh3, Magnus (again) spent a lot of time to pull himself together and muster the energy and courage to continue. He clearly had a winning position after 27.Rad1, but faced with 3 choices, he discarded Bg6 as he missed the Qh3 continuation, he new Bf8 was good but chose Rd7 as he missed white’s nice 28.e6!>
