 | | Phony Benoni: Outside of the pun possibilites, not a very remarkable game. My usual standard is that if I could have played the game, it's probably not very good. Well, I could have easily played this one, even as White. |

 | | FSR: Noone appears to have been the one administering the Spanish Inquisition. |
|
Nov-29-13 | | Robespierre: It appears that the Noone's single appeal to the Chessgame folks is that his name fits nicely with Michael Palin's enthusiastic & melodramatic rendition of Cardinal Ximenez's words to heretics! |

Nov-29-13 | | morfishine: So, do we fit the pun to the game, or the game to the pun? |
|
Nov-29-13 | | Tim Delaney: <waustad> Did you notice that one of the YouTube comments mirrored the pun verbatim? As others have noted, not a very good GOTD. After just 5 moves, black had a lost game. At move 16, in addition to the text, any bishop move whatsoever leads to swift mate. Not exactly a masterpiece. |

Nov-29-13 | | asiduodiego: Not a good game, but an instructive lesson on the dangers hidden in the Ruy Lopez. Many beginners, when playing this opening by memory, seem to forget the trivial danger in this setting: White is threatening Bxc6 and then Nxe5. Of course, in the main lines, this is not a real threat at all, but, as Scanlon showed in this game, if you're not careful, you'll lose a pawn, and then, lose the center, and, finally, lose the game. |

|
Nov-29-13 | | psmith: In defense of the pun, it is the Spanish game. And Ruy Lopez (the player) was a bishop. |

 | | Domdaniel: I've played *both* of these guys, a long time ago. I beat Scanlon, and I lost to Noone, though I drew with him in a later game. Quite a good player. Heh. "I lost to Noone" ... does that give me an infinite rating? I don't understand how people can confuse the word 'no-one' with the name 'Noone'. It's a sort of floating hyphen -- I recall seeing a movie review where the phrase "a noirish thriller" was 'corrected' by subs to read "an Oirish thriller". Hmm ... An Oirish Thriller ... could be a title for this game, ackshully ... |

It is unclear, though, whether Black ever even _had_ a plan. |

 | | Domdaniel: The Mulcahy Memorial tournament is held in honour of a strong Irish player, E. Noel Mulcahy, who was killed in a plane crash in 1969. The event has been running since the early 1970s, with a hiatus of a few years in the 1990's.
As it is usually run as a single open tournament, there tend to be mismatches in the 1st round, as in this game. |
