An Englishman: Good Evening: Highly speculative sacrifice of which I'm highly skeptical. If sound, 28... Black to play will be the hardest Sunday puzzle of all time, because no one will see Bronstein's 32nd move. Indeed, 32... Black to play would also be impossible to solve *if* Black's sacrifice was sound.

The reason I'm skeptical is because White could have played 36.axb3 and I can't figure out how Black should continue.

On 36. axb3, Black has 36...Rxc3+ 37. Rxc3 Qxe1+ 38. Kd3 Qf1+, etc.

An Englishman: Good Morning: <beatgiant>, what happens after 39.Kc2? I never was much good at tactics, but I must be blinder than ever.

<Good Morning:> You kibbitz in the morning too?

<I must be blinder> I must be blind myself, since I didn't see how safe White is after your defense.

But certainly Black's in no danger of losing here: 36. axb3 Rxc3+ 37. Rxc3 Qxe1+ 38. Kd3 Qb1+ 39. Ke3 Qe1+ is perpetual check. The question is whether Black wins. Maybe he can improve earlier somehow, but I haven't found any easy win yet.

May-12-08  beatgiant: One possible improvement is 33...Rg4. For example, 33...Rg4 34. Kf2 Qh4+ 35. Ke3 cxb3 looks like it gains a tempo over the game line, although I still see only a draw after 36. axb3 Rxc3+ etc.
