Kibitzer's Corner
Jun-23-07  Marmot PFL: Black gets a good game by returning the pawn, causing gelfand to offer a draw. Instead of taking it Alekseev might have played 23...f6 as ef6 Bxf6 wins for black

percyblakeney: Fascinating, Alekseev has been better in almost all his games in Dortmund, here Shredder exaggerates by giving him more than a pawn up in the final position, but even Rybka sees it as close to -0.40. He could also have won against one or two of Naiditsch, Anand and Leko with some luck, did beat Mamedyarov, and is undefeated with one round to go.

But <Marmot PFL>'s suggestion, <23. ... f6>, looks very strong:

How does White avoid losing a pawn? Beside 24. exf6? Bxf6! mentioned by <Marmot PFL> 24. Nxb7? fxe5 25. Qg2 Qd4+ loses quickly too. My engine comes up with <24. Qf4> but after <24. ... Qxf4 25. Rxf4> 25. gxf4? Nd4! 26. Kf2 Nb5 wins. <25. ... Rfc8!> 25. ... Rac8 26. Bd6! and White escapes <26. Bb6> 26. Bd6? fxe5 just loses because there is no rook on f8 to take for White. Now Black can opt for a long line ending up in a N vs B ending: <26. ... Nxe5 27. Nxa4 Bd6 28. Bc5 Rxa4 29. Bxd6 Rxc3 30. Rxa4 Rc1+ 31. Kf2 Rc2+ 32. Ke3 Nc4+ 33. Kd3 Nxb2+ 34. Kxc2 Nxa4>

this might be a draw and there are a lot of deviations but I don't find Shredder's evaluation that far off.
