Kibitzer's Corner
Jan-27-08  Knight13: That's a bizzare opening.
Jan-27-08  Whitehat1963: Obviously, I'm not a strong rook and pawn player. How does black prevent the pawn promotion?
Jan-28-08  Resignation Trap: <Whitehat1963> In the final position, Black just plays 80...Rg2, confining White's king to the corner = no promotion.

The best White could hope for would be something like this:

Black plays 1...Rf1! No progress is made with 2.Rg8+ Kf7, If White's rook leaves the g-file, Black plays ...Rg1, while if 2.Kg8?? Rf8#

Domdaniel: This is *not* a bizarre opening - it just suffers from a naming problem. Sometimes it transposes into a Catalan, sometimes into a QGD Tarrasch. The version here, with White playing d4 *after* Black plays ...d5 and ...c5, is sometimes called the Reversed Gruenfeld.

But they all lead to familiar positions, via various names and move orders. This is one of the earliest. It might be worth calling it the Pelikan system, if he didn't already have a Sicilian to his name.

Which just proves the old verse:

<A curious bird is the Pelikan/ Its beak holds more than its belikan>
