 | | Gilmoy: Black looks OK, even after 10. White has a "lead", but its Bc4 is loose, which counts almost as 1 tempo for Black. 10..a6 prevents Bb5+, and 11..Qc7 attacks the B with tempo. After 12.Qe2 Bd6, they're still tied in development, but White's Bd2 results in some congestion, whereas Black fianchettos, and uses his elbow room at d7 to double his Rs. Black's Q ends up on the better square -- she stays on the c7-h2 diagonal from move 11 until 35.Qxh3+ (which wins the game). Contrast to White's Q, which scurries around but never finds a threat. For this pawn structure, Qc7 had long-term offensive threats, Qe2 was mostly defensive. Credit Ivanchuk for steering the game to cash in on his more-active Q. |
