Caissanist: The US won the 1976 Olympiad because of their tremendous advantage in analyzing adjourned games. They had Pal Benko, a strong GM in his own right and an endgame specialist, and analysis of adjourned games was virtually his only responsibility. Nobody else--certainly not the Welsh--had anything comparable, and as the event went on the other teams developed a healthy respect for the Americans' superiority in adjournments.

Cooper was the one who offered the draw, probably out of fear of what Benko might have found in overnight analysis.
