Kibitzer's Corner
Oct-09-07  Towershield: 14.Bxg5 seems interesting.

14.Bxg5 hxg5 15.Nxg5 Bc8 16.Rae1

if ...Qe5

17.Nf3 Qc7 18.e5

Dec-31-23  mel gibson: I thought the same as the game line.

Stockfish 16 chooses a different line:

14. Bxg5

(14. Bxg5 (1.Bxg5 hxg5 2.Nxg5 Bd7 3.Rae1 Qd6 4.Rf4 Nh5 5.Qxh5 Qh6 6.Qg4 Bd4+ 7.Kh1 f6 8.Ne6+ Kf7 9.Nxf8 Rxf8 10.Rf3 Rg8 11.Rh3 Rxg4 12.Rxh6 Kg7 13.Rh3 Rg5 14.Nd1 b5 ) +5.05/47 513)

score for White +5.05 depth 47.

If I force SF to play the game ply it's not quite as strong:

14. Nxg5 hxg5

(14. .. hxg5 (1. ... hxg5 2.Bxg5 Nh7 3.Bf4 Qd8 4.fxe6 Qd4+ 5.Kh1 Qf6 6.Qxf6 Nxf6 7.exf7+ Rxf7 8.g3 b5 9.Rae1 a5 10.Kg2 a4 11.h4 Rff8 12.Nd1 a3 13.b3 c4 14.dxc4 bxc4 ) -3.62/49 405)

score for Black -3.62 depth 49.

Dec-31-23  stacase: 17.Bh6 I would have move 17. Rh3
Dec-31-23  Allderdice83: Why the banner ad at the bottom that won't go away?

scormus: Easy to find moves that lead to a win, but very difficult to find the "best" ones. Like <mel> I picked 14 Nxg5, and later <stacase> 17 Rh3. According to SF both are good but not, in the engine sense, the best moves.

Although SF prefers 14 Bxg5, it had a lot of trouble deciding, and finding the subsequent best play sequence is less straightforward. I cannot imagine any human choosing it OTB

Dec-31-23  stacase: <scormus> I was very happy to get the first 3 moves for an [Insane] Sunday.

If you're on a Desktop PC Try [F11], otherwise get an adblocker. But that has other problems for ordinary web pages that depend on ads for support. I'm trying to figure out how to just block ads for chessgames.com.

scormus: <stacase> Yes, I'm happy to take it too.

The only way I know pf the just block ads from CG is to pay for a premium package. I have a general blocker on my Windows PC which does it as well, butas you say, also interferes with other websites. Without something to block them, the ads come in an avalanche. They'd kill the session on my Android.

Dec-31-23  Messiah: Wasn't 'instanely' difficult at all.
Dec-31-23  Granny O Doul: @scormus: I'm sure there are many humans who would choose 14. Bxg5.

Nice final trick with the seeming spite check ...Qd4+.

Dec-31-23  King.Arthur.Brazil: I propose the line: 14. Nxg5 hxg5 15. Bxg5 Bd7 16. Bf4 Qd8 17. e5 Ne8 18. Rf3... I don't know if this is enough to win. As alternative, 16. Rf3 Rfd8 17. Rg3 where W perspectives seems better.
Dec-31-23  King.Arthur.Brazil: I didn't find whole continuation. After 22. Rh7 e5 23. fxe6 Qe7 seems B could escape.

scormus: <... Qd4+ ;) > I feel that should be the correct notation.
Would have been one of the great swindles of all time

Yes when I use my mobile phone which doesn't have an ad blocker I find this site almost impossible to read. Sometimes the little cross to switch off the advert that blocks the view cannot be found. This site works OK with my desktop as it has an ad blocker.

The adverts should take up only part of the screen using my Samsung mobile not block all the content from view.
