  tamar: Carlsen does play everything!
Nov-03-07  Elixir of Life: I have just scanned this game, but it seems that Carlsen played very well. Despite having a very VERY messed up pawn structure, he still won! Did black make any blunders?

tamar: Kulaots had 28 Ng2 hitting two pieces.
At the minimum, White takes away Black's two bishops.
Nov-04-07  Shams: when I hear "Berlin Defense", Carlsen's is not the first name that comes to mind. let's hope this is a one-time thing.

<tamar> 28.Ng2 Bd8 (...Bg3!?) looks to me like it keeps the two bishops; if 29.Rxe4 Bxd5 black can take on g2 and win the f-pawn. no?

Nov-06-07  jmrulez2004: remeber that doubled pawns arent exactly a bad thing in fact
when they are connected
they can act ias a wall to stop tyour opponents progres...:DDD when supported with a good supporting piece..its strong check out some of simoatowe(not sure bout his name, the new african gm) games..and also timmermans game you get a better undersatanding of doubled pawnd

  Mateo: <Shams> <<tamar> 28.Ng2 Bd8 (...Bg3!?) looks to me like it keeps the two bishops; if 29.Rxe4 Bxd5 black can take on g2 and win the f-pawn. no?> After 28.Ng2 Bd8? 29.Nxc7! wins a pawn. 29...Bxc7 30.Rxe4. Thus, Black should play 28.Ng2 Bf2+ (28...Bxd5?! 29.Nxh4 g5 30.Ng6 followed by f5, White is much better) 29.Rxf2 Bxd5.

<tamar> is right: 28.Kg2? is the turning point. The point was that Black threatened 28...c6. 28.Ng2! attacks the 'h4' Bishop and the Knight and defends 'f4'.

Definitely not. Since this game, the Berlin defence has become a nice weapon in Carlsen's hands.

Mar-10-11  joupajou: If 28. Ng2 then 28. ...Bf2+, which I think is a good move.

White might have to make an exchange with 29. Rxf2, and, his knight is still hanging in d5. Lots of trouble ahead, especially with a guy like Carlsen.

xx. Ne7+ is a nice ace in Kulaots' sleeve, though.

As much as I hate draws, white's situation wasn't that bad after all.
