I didn't see the game continuation, but I did look at <49.Rxg4>, and figured it was probably best. I figured <49...Kxd6> would be met by <50.Rh7> with a double attack on Ng7 (this is where I deviated from the game line).

- If black moves the N out of take (e.g. 50...Ne8?) then white wins the Rd7 with 51.Rd4+ - If black takes the pawn with the N via 50...Nxf5, we have 51.Bxf5 Rxh7 52.Bxh7, and hopefully white can convert the R+B+P vs R+2P ending. Sadly it didn't occur to me that black could attack the bishop with <50...Ke5>

...and things are pretty unclear. Pfft. |

|
Mar-02-17 | | agb2002: White has a bishop for a pawn.
Black threatens Kxd4 and Rxd6.
White can try to create a skewer to keep the material advantage with 49.Re4+: A) 49... Kxd6 50.Rd4+ Kc(e)7 51.Rxd7+ Kxd7 52.Rh7 Rf7 (52... Rg8 53.f6 or 53.Bc4 win the knight) 53.Bc4 Re7 54.f6 wins (54... Re4 55.fxg7 etc.). B) 49... Kf6 50.Rxg4
B.1) 50... Rxd6 51.Rh6+ Ke5 (51... Ke7 52.Rxg7+ Rf7 53.Rxf7+ Kxf7 54.Rxd6 + - [R+B]) 52.Rxd6 Kxd6 53.Rxg7 + - [B]. B.2) 50... Nxf5 51.Bxf5 Rxd6 (51... Rg7 52.Rh6+ wins) 52.Rg6+ Ke5 (52... Kxf5 53.Rxd6 + - [R vs P]; 52... Ke7 53.Rh7+ also wins a rook) 53.Re1+ Kd7 54.Rd1+ wins a rook. C) 49... Kd5 50.Rxg4
C.1) 50... Kxd6 51.Rd4+ as in A.
C.2) 50... Rxd6 51.Rxg7 + - [B].
C.3) 50... Kc5 51.Ne4+ + - [B]. |
|
Mar-02-17 | | agb2002: I've just noticed that 53.Bc4 in my line A can be met with 53... g3+ because the bishop no longer protects the rook so that if 54.Kxg3 then 54... Nxf5+ wins. Therefore, 53.f6 is preferable. |

Mar-02-17 | | gofer: Okay, so we have two pieces en-prise, but are we worried...!? A little perhaps... I looked at the blazen pawn push f6! Thinking of "Death or Glory"! But it seems to be death... <49 f6 Kxd4 50 fxg7 Rxg7 and black as two supported connected passed pawns, ouch!>
After discarding that garbage, I was a little flummoxed. Lots of things to try... ...but finally, I felt I could simply take the loose
pawn on g4.
<49 Rxg4! ...>
Ironically the knight is immune!
49 ... Kxd6
50 Rd4+ Ke7/Kc7
51 Rxd7+ Kxd7
52 Rh7 Rf7 (Rg8 53 Bc4 )
53 Bc4 Re7
54 f6
49 ... Rxd6
50 Re1+ Kd5 (Kf6 Rg6+ )
51 Rxg7!
So what else?!
<49 ... Nxf5>
<50 Nxf5 Rxd3>
<51 Ng3! ...>
 click for larger viewWhite is a pawn down, but his rooks are god-like, they will simply
march up the board marshalling the black king to the back rank
probably into the h8 corner.
I am not saying that its a definite win, but it looks okay, loads of
traps for black to navigate through...
One continuation might be...
51 ... Rd2+
52 Ke3 Rb2
53 Rh5+ Ke6
54 Re4+!

I didn't want to lose the knight.

|
Mar-02-17 | | saturn2: I took 49 Re4 instead of Rxg4 but had similar follow uo Rd4+, RxR, Rh7 pinning the knight. If black tries to protect the knight by Re7 (instead of Rg8) there is also f6. |

 | | Jimfromprovidence: Very tough but fair puzzle. The 49 Rxg4 Nxf5 line seems like the most difficult to figure out. click for larger view Also, FWIW, 53 Bc4 is a good alternative to 53 f6. click for larger view |

Mar-02-17 | | LIzzard: I got stuck on the 49: Re4+, which I think will still win the knight, but still leaves the advanced pawn. |
