plang: Nunn had played 20 Bc4 against Browne in Tilburg 1982 in a game that was drawn. Browne had suggested 20 Be4 as an improvement after the game. The move had then been tried in a 1988 correspondence game. Black had been played 21..Rb8 and got into trouble quickly (and lost). Sadler, not familiar with that game, played 21..0-0 which he felt was a clear improvement. Sadler was extremely impressed with Nunn's defensive plan starting with 28 Rhe1!: "The Doc took the excellent decision not to fear ..e4 extremely quickly, and the whole defensive plan he finds is extremely original. In order to defend against a dark-square assault on the queenside, he bunches his major pieces in the centre of the board. The idea is not to cover the weak squares but to provide a buffer for the White king when it is forced to flee from the queenside". Sadler avoided the repetition with 34 R3a5?! but after 35 Rd5 he realized he was in trouble. Sadler felt that 42 g3 would have given White good winning chances restricting the bishop on d6.
