 | | Ulhumbrus: Instead of 18 Bb3, 18 Bb1 or 18 Be2 conserves the bishop pair. One justification for 19 Bd1 instead of 19 Bd2 is that on 19 Bd2 Nxb3 any White prospect for advantage may have disappeared. |

It looks as if black had a major advantage, controls the center and has active pieces. Of course, in fact, this is not the case and like in most openings, white has a small advantage, but it still looks like that and I think it's one of the most beautiful openings. |

 | | Shams: I started playing 4.d3 because I could get nowhere against this setup. |

| Jan-14-08 | | square dance: i guess this ending could be called "bad bishops of opposite color". |

 | | Ulhumbrus: <Shams: I started playing 4.d3 because I could get nowhere against this setup.> You could try taking a look at the remarks on the Ruy Lopez open defence in Lasker's book "common sense in chess" An alternative to 12 Nf3-d4 is 12 exf5 Nxf6 and only now 13 Nf3-d4 |

| Jan-14-08 | | Resignation Trap: <Gilmoy> He obviously means 5.d3. :) That reminds me of a game which went 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bb5 a6 4.Bxc6 and Black, not looking at the board, automatically played 4...Nf6. White refuted this innovation with 5.Ba4! |

 | | Gilmoy: Sounds like the (urban?) legendary correspondence game in which Black, on receiving 1.e4, cleverly saved one postcard with 1..b6 2.<any> Bb7, and after receiving 2.Ba6 3.Bxb7, saved several more postcards :) |

 | | Gilmoy: <RT: ... Black, not looking at the board, ...> A recent opponent did that in the little-used Winawer Sac line: 3.Nc3 Bb4 4.a3 c5 5.axb4 and he starts thinking -- out of book ^_^ <Shams>: Canadian Ba6on, mmm. Best served on 8x8-inch pizzas with ripe (pine)apples! |
