| Jan-22-08 | | Mateo: <outplayer: Well, <Mateo>, 35.Kxg2 is wrong.> what's wrong with it, Karl? |
Jan-22-08
 | | karnak64: Bummer. |
| Jan-22-08 | | krisxchy: Leko will win as he can get out of the checks ok |
Jan-22-08
 | | outplayer: Freud would agree that an exchange up and a strong pawn on seventh rank means a win. I don't think Carlsen has a perpetual here. |

 | | chessgames.com: That's it for today. Thanks to everybody for coming by. Hope to see you tomorrow (7:30 am USA/Eastern) for round #10. |
| Jan-22-08 | | Mateo: 39...Qf3?? that's wrong. 39...Qd4 holds. |
| Jan-22-08 | | xenophon: how about over to the Adams game for the 80 move inevitable draw? |
Jan-22-08
 | | karnak64: Congrads, though, to Leko. Adams - Van Wely, anyone? |
Jan-22-08
 | | boz: Leko has a good record against Carlsen, doesn't he? |
| Jan-22-08 | | socratead: Congrats Leko! Yet another crystal clear win. |
| Jan-22-08 | | xenophon: <karnak64: Congrads, though, to Leko. Adams - Van Wely, anyone?> I'm on for it-looks my sort of game-wait 'til they go to sleep then pounce! |
| Jan-22-08 | | Mateo: so far, 1.Carlsen, Aronian 5,5. 3.Kramnik, Radjabov, Anand, 5 points. 6.Mamedyarov, Ivanchuk, Topalov, Leko, 4,5. All these players could still win the tournament. |
Jan-22-08
 | | patzer2: Great game Peter Leko! If only Carlsen had time to find 37...Qd4! which seems to hold the passer with the pair of Knights versus the Rook at the end, he might have held the draw. |
Jan-22-08
 | | bernieno: This position was a draw until Carlsen's 39th move. Perhaps the time trouble cost him the game. |
| Jan-22-08 | | GeauxCool: Has anyone else noticed that Leko seems to do well after rest days? |
| Jan-22-08 | | arjunkakar: I am sad for carlsen, just his age...a win would be historic. This could be crushing. But if he can still somehow come back and win this..it would be amazing...watch out for anand though, he is back |

| Jan-22-08 | | arnaud1959: On 39.- d4 What happens if White plays 38. xb6 (or xf7+ followed by xb6)? |
Jan-22-08
 | | Eyal: <arnaud1959> 39...Qd4 40.Qxb6? Qxb6 41.a8=Q Qd6+ winning the white rook. |
Jan-22-08
 | | Eyal: In the post-game interview, Leko is very annoyed with himself for having missed the win of a pawn in the line 21.Nxf6+ Qxf6 22.Bxb4 axb4 23.dxe5 Nxe5 24.Nxe5 Rxe5 25.Qxc7, and says that he had played much better games in this tournament than this one, that he did not win. Both players were in a time scramble during the last phase of the game, and apparently when Carlsen played 39...Qf3?? he forgot that after 40.Qxb6 the white queen defends f2. |

Jan-23-08
 | | ahmadov: 39...Qf3 is the worst blunder of the tournament... |
Jan-23-08

Jan-23-08
 | | ahmadov: <WannaBe: <ahmadov> Tournament isn't over, yet... =)> Really :-) Then, my statement is the worst fan statement of the tournament :-) |
Jan-26-08
 | | Richard Taylor: Carlsen just had to play 39..Na8. Or Qd4 at the right moment... I just played this game over and I was surprised by 39 .. Qf3. All players blunder of whatever strength.
And it was not a "crystal clear win" at all. |
Jan-26-08
 | | Eyal: <Carlsen just had to play 39..Na8.> 39...Na8 loses to 40.Rxf7+ Kg8 [or 40...Kh6 41.Qf4+ Kh5 42.Qxf6] 41.Qe7 and Black is out of useful checks. The only move that can hold Black's position is 39...Qd4 - but it seems to be enough. The post-mortem consensus at Corus was that had Carlsen played this move instead of blundering with seconds on his clock by Qf3, it should have been a draw. |
