Jan-23-08   belgradegambit: <tal lover: why not 22...Bxh4?>

After 22...Bxh4 Blacks dark squares become very weak. At some point White's rook goes to e6 and Black gets tied up. I like Stellwagens idea of preserving the bishop. Actually it was during White's opening play that I was thinking "why this? and why that?". Perhaps its the latest theory but it looked bizarre to me.

In this position Nepomniachtchi played the rather mundane 36 Bg5-e7.

But as pointed out in the New In Chess SOS column http://www.newinchess.com/games/SOS..., Nepomniachtchi missed the instantly winning 36 Rh4xb4!, based on the tactical ideas <STALEMATED KING> and <SHIELDING YOUR KING IS A FULL-TIME JOB>.

(VAR) Position after 36 Rh4xb4!

The point is that 36 ... Bc5xRb4?? <EXPOSES> the <STALEMATED> Black a7-king along the a7-g1 diagonal, losing on the spot to 37 Bg5-e3+.

New In Chess in fact says the following:

<36.Be7

36.Rxb4! wins on the spot because of 36...Bxb4? 37.Be3+.>

Jul-04-08   oxxo: While it looks at first sight like black could soldier on with 44... Bxh6, after 45. Bf6 his h and e pawns will fall and he will be unable to prevent white's e pawn promotion. Good time to resign, good call by the black player.
