Agreed. If a puzzle is just its first move, today was completely superficial. And likewise, Henry James' "Turn of the Screw" would be just a ghost story... (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Tu..., particularly the section "Literary significance & criticism").

Too bad.

A.G. Argent: <humangraymatter: Who says it is easy? The first move is obvious if you know...> Hear, hear. Sure, 41.Qxe7+ is, as D. Zechiel says, almost forced because Inarkiev is one move shy of death but the ensuing combination is indeed beautiful. And I love how sometimes it's the quiet moves in chess that can loom deadly as many as 30 moves later ie. 20.Ba2. Bit helpful, that.

43.qg8+ kh6
how does white win?>

right....I guess we have a draw by repeated checks in that case, or am i missing something too
May-04-08   baba1000: black could have easily drawn this game

aazqua: I didn't think this was insane at all. In fact, I'd say it's pretty easy. Black has mate in one so white has to check. Q*n is fairly obvious. Clearly if the king takes the rook check comes next. The only real issue is deflecting the queen but this is pretty obvious too.

45 kf8 seems a lot better than kh8.

I haven't a quad computer to offer 24 hour analysis to the problem.

I think 31. Ba4 to yesterdays puzzle is still somewhat better than Bd3.

It appears 31. Bd3 wasn't as bad as I first thought, but it's still my second choice.

I wanted to close out my analysis of yesterday's game. Thanks for the input.

May-04-08   stacase: 41 Qxe7+ is the only real move white has. Except for 41 rh1 black's next move will be 41 Qh3++ So why does the puzzle start there?

Oh well, I got the first move on a Sunday puzzle. (-:

I got most of the rest too.

May-04-08   openingspecialist: this was definately to easy for a sunday. but i think it took a while to solve. It's pretty easy combo play. I dont really like the line after Kf8 for white but id live with it.

kevin86: This one is quite easy for a Sunday-mainly because much of the combination is forced with white being under the gun of a mate threat.

An old chessbook I used to have has the correct title for a combination such as this: CHESSBOARD MAGIC.

kevin86: If black deviates from the text with 45...Kf8,white has 46 Rxe8+ Kxe8 47 c8=Q Ke7 48 Qxf5... The mate threat is gone and white is ahead a piece for a pawn.

patzer2: The Sunday May 4, 2008 puzzle is an amusing sequence of forced moves utilizing a variety of tactical themes ("combined operations"), which begins with the decoy Queen pseudo sacrifice 41. Qxe7+!!

In the final position, what follows is 50...Kh6 51. Qh8+ , when White picks off the previously decoyed Black Queen (after 43. Rh1! Qxh1) with a skewer tactic.

Prior to this move, 42. Rd7+ forced the deflection 42...Kf8 in order to prepare the discovered check 45. Re8+ and the Queening move 49. c8=Q+!

patzer2: Because of the precarious nature of Black's King, about to be mated, the combination with 41. Qxe7+!! might also be categorized as a "desperado" or "defensive" combination.

ramrock: someone help here. What am I missing?? After Qxe7+ why doesn't black play Rxe7, and after white's c8(q)+, black plays Kg7 ??? the best i can see for white here is a forced draw by perpetual check. How can white win? As an earlier kibitzer said ... "am i missing something?" Anyone?

41. Qxe7+ Rxe7 42. c8=Q+ Kg7 43. Rh1 Qxh1 44. Qxf5

and black has an extra piece. Still, it would have been better than the line played in the game.

  ramrock: <MostlyAverageJoe>

thank you! when i looked at that before, somehow i thought black could perpetually check by 44. ... Qh3+ 45. Kf4 Qh2+ 46. Kg5 Qh6+ 47. Kf4 Qh2+ etc... but i missed the obvious fact that the King just takes the g4 pawn... duh...

Jul-03-08   Jedithious: Awesome puzzle! The queen sacrifice was obvious since it was the only move in which white wouldn't be mated by black.
Sep-17-08   Xeroxx: <Awesome puzzle!>

But the game was mediocre??
