Kibitzer's Corner
May-22-09  Retireborn: If 29...Kh8 was really played, then White had a quicker win with 30.g6!

Gheorghiu, annotating the game for The New Chess Player, gives 29...Kg8 as played, but the problem then is that 33.Bg6 becomes a blunder! I suspect that 29...Kh8 as given in Informator was indeed the real move, but it is a beautiful attacking game either way.

Sep-26-13  Howard: Actually, you're probably right about 29...Kh8 being the actual move played, not to mention that 30.g6 would have wrapped the game up faster.

My reason for stating so is because this well-played game (which, by the way, was Huebner's only loss in the Olympiad) was given in Chess Life and Review (as it was called back then) in its Olympiad report. Hardly any notes were given, but I vaguely recall that the magazine did indeed point out that 30.g6 would have been a bit faster.

Nov-02-13  Retireborn: Howard, just noticed your comment, for which many thanks. It's always pleasing to have these little mysteries cleared up!
Feb-05-15  Howard: Well, let me tell you something, Retireborn. I'm actually a picky guy---some of the comments I've posted on this website border on nitpicky.
