Kibitzer's Corner
Apr-12-16  ozmikey: A very interesting R+P endgame in which I believe White misses his big chance on move 57. Instead of 57. Kf6?, 57. f6! forces an interesting draw:

(a) 57...Kd8?? 58. f7 Rf2 59. Kg6, when Black is actually lost due to the threat of 60. Rxb2,

(b) 57...Rf2 58. f7+ Rxf7 59. Rb8+ Ke7 60. Rb7+ with perpetual,

(c) 57...Rg2+ 58. Kh6! (the right square, as we shall see) a4 (threatening ...a3, when the Rxb2 trick will no longer work) 59. Rb8+ Kd7 60. f7 Rf2 61. Rxb2! Rxf7 62. Rb7+ with a witty perpetual similar to variation (b), with the added point that the king can't escape the checks via g7 because of White's king!

At the end of the game, 62...Rf1! is an important finesse. Playing through the game I wondered why Black didn't play the simple 62...a2, but White might have swindled a draw by 63. Rxb2 a1=Q? (63. Rxb2 should still win, although not without a struggle) 64. Rxf2 and although Black can quickly snare the rook by 64...Qxe5+ 65. Kf8 Qd6+ and 66...Qg3+, it's a bishop's pawn so White will always have the ...Kh8! resource when Black plays ...Qg6+.
