percyblakeney: <In the rapid game Van Wely baffled the spectators by sacrificing a knight on move 6. To be honest this was not an extravagant show of aggression, because the sacrifice in fact is only good for a draw. As Kramnik jokingly rebuked his second after the game: ‘This guy was trying to make a draw on move 6!’ In fact Van Wely quite soon after executing the move regretted his choice and cursed himself for not having played 6.Bc4. However, to his astonishment Kramnik gave him a new chance when he avoided the draw with 10…Ke7 (instead of 10…Ke8) and tried to play for a win. In the ensuing complications White had the better chances with the three pawns he collected in return for his knight, but he had little time to work on a solid winning strategy. In fact, Van Wely admitted after the game that he wouldn’t be surprised if at some point he had been lost. Luckily for him he was spared this outcome and after 60 moves the game ended in a draw.>

chessmoron: 45...Rc3 could have been difficult for Van Wely's position.
