Shams: Very impressive, the young Hess outmaneuvers a top GM from the black side of an exchange Spanish (!). 17...Qg4!, fishing for holes, makes a nice impression-- after white snaps the knight off black is left with three weak isolated pawns. No doubt white had plans to fend off the attack and then pile up on the pawns to win the ending, but Hess was able to trade off all three of them. A marvelous win. Who coaches this kid?
Apr-02-08  Riverbeast: Well played from start to finish
Apr-02-08  mistreaver: 23... Pxg3 is nice shot, leaving both black queen and rook en-prise. Altought i can't see all refutations i guess some general ideas are on 24 Rxg4 then 24...Rxe1+ followed by...um... can some1 tell =).And if 24 Rxe8 then i guess 24 ...Pxh2 wins at once
Apr-02-08  Riverbeast: <mistreaver> On 24 Rxg4 Rxe1+ 25. Kg2 gxh2 26. Rh4 Rg1+ folowed by 27)...h1(Q) and black has won two rooks and a pawn for the queen, exposed white's king, and has the passed 'h' pawn...should be an easy win for black.

That was simple tactics...what was most impressive (as Shams also noted) was how Hess completely outmaneuvered Stripunsky after that... in what looked like a relatively equal position
