lostemperor: I think Black has equalised comfortably but 17 ... Rac8 is a mistake, a too rash decision from <ahmadov>, what gave me two rooks for queen in a favorable position. He let me win:-)

ahmadov: Finally, I found some time to annotate this game with the help of my Fritz:

1.d4 d5 2.Nf3 Nf6 3.e3 Bg4 4.c4 c6 5.Qb3 Qc7 <5…Qc7 looked a bit odd to me, but I did not like 5…Qb6 either, even though my computer prefers it. According to this database, both moves have been played in this position.>

6.Ne5 Nbd7 <a very bad move played against Patrick’s very natural and strong move... I should have played the obvious 6... Bf5 or at least 6...e6.>

7.Nxg4 Nxg4 8.Nc3 e6 9.Bd2 Be7 10.Rc1 Ngf6 <I ignored 10.Rc1 and instead of playing 10...dxc4 or 10...Qb6 I played this incorrect move>

11.Bd3 <Patrick misses his chance of winning a pawn and obtaining substantial advantage by not playing 11.cxd5 exd5 12.Nxd5 Nxd5 13.Qxd5 Nf6 14.Qa5>

11...0–0 12.0–0 Qb6 <finally, I play the correct move>

13.Qc2 e5 <13...dxc4 or 13...Rfc8 were better> 14.cxd5 <better was 14.Na4 Qd8 15.cxd5 cxd5 16.Qb3 Qb8>

14...exd4 15.Ne4 <this equals the position or even gives a little edge to Black, maybe my opponent should have played 15.Na4>

15...cxd5 16.Nxf6+ Nxf6 17.exd4 Rac8 <I did not want to play 17...Qxd4 as I thought that 18.Bc3 would give my opponent a lot of advantage. Patrick later said that he thought 17...Rac8 was a blunder. I said I did not expect him to exchange his Queen to my Rooks. I always believed that in amateur chess it is more convenient to play with a Queen against two Rooks in an equal position. Therefore, I thought I had the upper hand after the exchange.>

18.Qxc8 Rxc8 19.Rxc8+ Bf8 20.Bc3 g6 21.Re1 Kg7 22.g3 Bb4 <until here we did not do any major mistake and the position is equal here>

23.Rb1 Qe6 <I played this move with hope that the game would be drawn and our first encounter which we decided to post on chessgames.com would end peacefully. Interestingly, my computer also agrees with my opinion that 23...Qe6 draws the game by repetition (23...Qe6 24.Rc7 Qb6 25.Rc8 Qe6 26.Rc7), even though it suggests 23...Qd6 or 23...a6 with a slight edge for Black>

24.Rc7 Qb6 25.Rc8 Qe6 26.Rb8 <Patrick said he did not like the idea of drawing this game because other chessgames.com users would found this game boring and that they would be upset about it>

26...Bxc3 27.bxc3 Ne4 <before this move Black had some advantage ( 0.80) but this advantage was evaporated by 27...Ne4. 27...b6 or 27...Qg4 was better. So, I would say I lost this game because of 27...Ne4>

28.Bxe4 Qxe4 <another bad move. Patrick suggested that 28...dxe4 was better. I said maybe he was right but I was worried about the strong c and d pawns advancing. It seems that my computer agrees with Patrick.>

29.R8xb7 Qc2 30.Re1 Qxc3 31.Ree7 Qa1+ 32.Kg2 Qxa2 <I carelessly continue capturing pawns in despair. Even here, instead of playing 32...g5, I ignore the danger on the 7th rank>

33.Rxa7 <It seems Patrick also has great appetite for pawns instead of directly attacking my King by 33.Rxf7>

33...Qc4 34.Rxf7+ Kh6 35.Rxh7+ Kg5 36.h4+ <Patrick misses mate in 4 (36.Raf7 Qxd4 37.h4+ Qxh4 38.gxh4+ Kg4 39.f3#), which I guess I felt during the game.>

36...Kf5 37.Raf7+ Ke4 38.Rf4+ Kd3 39.Rg7 Qc6 40.Rg4 Ke2 41.R7xg6 Qd7 42.h5 <the last mistake in the game>

42...Qf5 43.Rf4 Qxh5 44.Re6+ Kd3 45.Re5 1–0

lostemperor: Nice analysis Zahir! I always wanted to have these for my games. I really thought 17 ... Rac8 was the decisive mistake here. Seems we both missed quite a few this game. Sure glad I am too weak a player to go for the draw after 25 ... Qe6;-).

ahmadov: <lostemperor><I always wanted to have these for my games.> Then you have to start playing with <Switch> and ask him to annotate the games... He is very good at that... ;-)

OhioChessFan: 27...Ne4 hurt for sure. While centralized, White's LSB wasn't a very good piece. And the Rooks had a field day on squares that the Knight had previously been defending. The bigger point was it basically gave a tempo away, similar to the first person exchanging Rooks on the last rank. I would have played b6 in a heartbeat.
