Jul-05-08  Knight13: 3-6 moves and Black will be pushed over the cliff. How many moves he'll last during the fall before he says hello to concret, no idea.

whiteshark: so black's aP is doing the race ? Queening square a1 is covered by Bd4. This may cost White a piece.

Ulhumbrus: On 46 Re7+ Kd6 47 Rxe4 Kc5 gets ready to push the a pawn, but Gustafsson does not wait for it and resigns at this point
Jul-05-08  Knight13: <Ulhumbrus: On 46 Re7+ Kd6 47 Rxe4 Kc5 gets ready to push the a pawn, but Gustafsson does not wait for it and resigns at this point> Unlike 1500-rated potheads....
Jul-05-08  micartouse: Bravo Peter! I hope Gustafsson doesn't come away too jaded from this humbling game.
Jul-05-08  Red October: congratulations to Leko, very hard fought and interesting game

eternaloptimist: Phooey! It's definitely going to tough for Gusti to win the trnt. now because Leko is leading the field by 1/2 pt.. I hate to see the underdog lose in this game.

RandomVisitor: 23.Bxf6=. From this point on black had an advantage.
Jul-05-08  wanabe2000: I didn't like 16.Qb3 when played. The weak pawn at b3 may have been the fatal mistake?
Jul-05-08  Confuse: those last few moves were a doozy. well done peter.

Ulhumbrus: 16 Qb3 gives White a permanent weakness in the form of the doubled b pawns. An alternative is the pawn sacrifice 16 Nb5 Bxb5 17 cxb5 Qxb5 18 Ng5 threatening e5 which attacks the d6 pawn as well as discovering an attack upon the h pawn.

eternaloptimist: <wannabe2000: I didn't like 16.Qb3 when played. The weak pawn at b3 may have been the fatal mistake?> Perhaps. It seems like the vast majority of the time when someone plays Qb3 (or Qb6) it doesn't do a whole lot, & sometimes it even loses the game for the person who plays it.
Jul-05-08  Elxiddicus: Was white really forced to play 32. Nxd4 and give black the powerful passer? Couldn't he have have played something else to keep black's DSB locked away?

charlie2000: Did anyone notice that Kramnik altered from Leko in this opening last round by Lekon playing Qb7 which looks much stronger as it pins the pawn, stopping an advance e5 and so further playing f6. Totally different dynamic
Jul-05-08  SniperOnG7: I suppose Leko, who uses the Queen's Indian regularly, has a better feel of the positions that result than Kramnik, who was playing it most probably to hide match prep (or playing it for the lawls XD). Good game Leko.
Jul-05-08  Everett: Leko plays like an updated Karpov in the QID.
Jul-06-08  Alphastar: <eternaloptimist: Perhaps. It seems like the vast majority of the time when someone plays Qb3 (or Qb6) it doesn't do a whole lot, & sometimes it even loses the game for the person who plays it.>

Usually a queen exchange on b3 is not so bad because most of the time the pawn on b3 is not weak (supported by c2-pawn and can move forward) and white can pressure the opponent's a-pawn with the rooks on the a-file and use the extra b-pawn as a battering ram. In this case it was pretty bad though because not only had the b3-pawn lost its support by the c2-pawn, it was also fixed by the c5-pawn.
