Jul-06-08  blacksburg: for the moment, i think black's rook is better than white's. black's rook is freezing the Bd4, while white's rook isn't really doing anything.

i would play b3, preparing c4 eventually, or Ke3, aiming for d3, then Nd2 to watch f3 and c4, then b3 and c4. but after c4, white's d4 bishop would then be pinned and threatened by ...Bc5 maybe. this is why i think black should keep his rook, it's helping to discourage c4, while white's rook isn't doing anything to support c4 right now.

Jul-06-08  madlydeeply: well now its opposite color bishop draw after Bc5. Well it was fun while it lasted

  Ulhumbrus: 28...Bxc5 and I forecast a draw
Jul-06-08  blacksburg: oohh, leko is agreeing to opposite colored bishops? has he given up on trying to win here?
Jul-06-08  Jesspatrick: Heh. Had a couple 11-year olds in the same quad a few weeks ago. Both draws.

Another idea for White is to play for g4, preventing ...f5 and keeping the N posted at e4. For now, this N needs to stay posted on light squares.

Jul-06-08  Jesspatrick: Leko's last is a signal that he'd be content with a draw.
Jul-06-08  blacksburg: booo Nc5! hooray beer!
Jul-06-08  pilllango: <blacksburg: oohh, leko is agreeing to opposite colored bishops? has he given up on trying to win here?> I guess Re2 was to prevent the exchange of the rooks on the 2nd rank, so maybe not. There are not that many possibilities to advance for white, anyway.

Ulhumbrus: Two famous wins with opposite coloured bishopa are Nimzowitsch vs Tarrasch, 1928 and Nimzowitsch vs Capablanca, 1913

It's probably going to be a draw, but opposite colored bishops aren't so automatically drawish when the rooks are still on. That's why Leko prepared Nc5 by Re2 - so that Black wouldn't force the exchange of rooks as well with Rd2+.

Jul-06-08  madlydeeply: this game proves yet again that one can have immense talent and no killer instinct. Marin's book "learn from the legends" is full of games where killers went for the win in positions like this. Kortchnoi would NEVER let up pressure! my MAN!!

loved the comments. love watching games on chessgames.

Jul-06-08  blacksburg: well it's not a draw yet, maybe leko will give it a shot, after all, there's not really any risk involved.
Jul-06-08  Jesspatrick: There's plenty of fight left in this one, but Leko's taking no chances. This one is technically more difficult than his win over Gustafsson yesterday.

Ulhumbrus: I doubt whether White has any way to win. I won't be surprised if they agree to a draw within a few moves.
Jul-06-08  madlydeeply: maybe Leko looked over at Gusta/Nepo game and decided that he might take first with a draw...ha!

Karpov was always winning opposite colored bishop endgames but i think they were more complicated than this...protected passed pawns in the center etc.

Jul-06-08  blacksburg: <Two famous wins with opposite coloured bishopa are Nimzowitsch vs Tarrasch, 1928 and Nimzowitsch vs Capablanca, 1913>

in both of these the winner managed to get a very active king. leko's isn't very active. maybe he can try to swap rooks and get his king to c5?

Jul-06-08  percyblakeney: Draw.
Jul-06-08  madlydeeply: in both the tarrasch and capablanca games, the losing side had three pawns islands also.
Jul-06-08  Jesspatrick: Just another resource and risk management draw. Can't blame Leko.

Jul-06-08  madlydeeply: After reading biographies of Fischer and Kortchnoi, etc, I can blame Leko for not winning won games! Hell yes! Doesn't he know he's here for my personal entertainment!

I wonder why I take it so personally. Most be a personal problem

Jul-06-08  eternaloptimist: <madlydeeply: Karpov was always winning opposite colored bishop endgames but i think they were more complicated than this...protected passed pawns in the center etc.> Yeah, Karpov is a much better endgame player than Leko will ever be. Of course his rating has dropped a lot because he is 57 & doesn't have the concentration & nerves that he used to have. In fact, he is ranked 72nd on the July FIDE rating list. It is a shame he is ranked so much lower than he was in his prime.
Jul-06-08  eternaloptimist: Karpov also has a 2651 rating now, which is a lot lower than his peak rating in the 2700s.

whiteshark: Arkadi, Arkadi, bring me back my 1000 bucks.
Jul-06-08  Abejorral: What people expected from Leko ?? according to his style, having a +2, why taking the risk to win ?? :-)
