  chancho: 84...Rxc8 bxc8=Q 85.Qc4+ Qxc4+ Kxc4 and the black passer decides.
Jul-28-08  percyblakeney: <Looks like Carlsen played for a loss and succeeded here>

It had to happen sooner or later, would maybe have been more logical if it had happened in the first game against Bacrot, where the latter had a very promising position when he started blundering.

Jul-28-08  Splittet: Maybe Magnus was too confident he would handle the complications arising after the queen exchange better?
Jul-28-08  cuendillar: <Ulhumbrus: No, it looks like a win for Black. 84..Qb6+ followed by ..Rd8! keeps the White b pawn back.> Or much simpler 84...Qc4+ 85.Qxc4+ Kxc4 and the black pawn promotes unchallenged.
Jul-28-08  positionalgenius: Good job alekseev.

suenteus po 147: Like Topalov before him, Carlsen learns that the blade has an edge on both sides.

  Sneaky: But there is no joy in Mudville;
The Mighty Carlsen has struck out.

Thorski: <suenteus po 147: Like Topalov before him, Carlsen learns that the blade has an edge on both sides.> He should move to Japan.
Jul-28-08  malthrope: <zanshin: <kamalakanta: I believe Carlsen will lose this game. Any takers?> You were right. Do you have any ideas for the lottery numbers in Florida? ;-)>

Hehehe... <zanshin> ;) Yes! Please put me on that lottery <waiting list> too! :^)

SetNoEscapeOn: What a run that just ended.
Jul-28-08  percyblakeney: I think it was Carlsen's 35th game since his previous loss, if the eight rapid games against Leko are included.
Jul-28-08  Thrajin: <He should move to Japan.> LOL!

suenteus po 147: Pretty sweet payout to the wise few who put their money on Alekseev this game...

acirce: <suenteus po 147> Yes, but unfortunately I only bet 25 chessbucks... I won more on Carlsen playing 1.e4 :-)

suenteus po 147: <acirce> That's still win-win :) Considering what I would have bet this round, I'm glad I missed placing today's bets.
Jul-28-08  zanshin: <malthrope: Hehehe... <zanshin> ;) Yes! Please put me on that lottery <waiting list> too! :^)>

You got it <Mal> ;-) Fwi, I was able to find someone willing to donate a picture of Eugene (Eugenio Torre) <CG> said it was a little small, but beggars can't be choosers ;-)

al wazir: The moral is, don't try to win a drawn game (especially when your opponent has connected passed pawns).
Jul-28-08  Udit Narayan: Carlsen is not a genius anymore.

Domdaniel: <al wazir> Excellent point. Sometimes you have to take the draw.

I'd like to say I left in disgust and shock when Magnus exchanged queens, but it isn't true. I just left.

Jessicafischer Queen are you listening? Time to throw in a Leko comment, eh?

SetNoEscapeOn: I don't think Carlsen did anything wrong here in principle. When you always fight at this level, sometimes you'll lose...

SetNoEscapeOn: Also, maybe Alekseev wasn't going to accept any draw. He did have the connected passers.

Ulhumbrus: In his comments on the game Steinitz vs Chigorin, 1892 in his book "The development of chess style", Batsford 1997 algebraic edition, this is what Euwe has to say about 4...d6 as played by Tchigorin instead of 4...Bc5 as Alekseev plays in the current game: <Black shuts in his bad bishop, for 4..Bc5 would (also) have brought distinct difficulties after 5 c3! ( 5 Bxc6 leads to nothing because of 5...dxc6! after which 6 Nxe5? fails against 6..Qd4! 7 Be3 Qxe5 8 d4 Qxe4 9 dxc5 Qxg2) and White now really threatens 6 Bxc6 followed by 7 Nxe5. If Black continues 5...d6 there follows 6 d4 with a clear advantage to White>
Jul-28-08  wanabe2000: <Ulhumbrus> Great quote and comment. Looks like one (MC)should study the "old guys" also as well as contemporary players.
Jul-28-08  Jason Frost: <84...Rxc8 bxc8=Q 85.Qc4+ Qxc4+ Kxc4 and the black passer decides.> Or 84...Qc4+ and black dosen't need his passer to win
