Jul-30-08  hcbsb: The fact is the draw was a good result for Dominguez that has a point ahead. Tomorrow will play to a draw.

Jul-30-08  hcbsb: <boz: You have to be fearless to play the Dragon at this level.>

I didn't understand why the risky Dragon on a decisive game.

Jul-30-08  MindCtrol9: <Dominguez is going to be in the top ten pretty soon, and I am agree, but still needs to control his nerves a little more. That's my personal evaluation from two games I have washed>

chessgames.com: Thanks to everybody for stopping by. Come back for the final round, tomorrow at 8:00am (USA/Eastern).
Jul-30-08  wanabe2000: It is easy in retrospect but after 13.h4 (not in the DB) Carlsen's reply 13.....h5 looked risky. In fact LD had the inititive the whole game after that move. The game V Sareen vs K Gopalakrishna, 2000 shows a nice attack by Black in the Dragon in which LD and MC varied after 12....a6.
Jul-30-08  messachess: Hello. Just now seeing the game. This was two fighters doing their thing. Personally, I gave up on the Dragon because of problems I saw in the center for black. I think the record must show that it's not played much at this level. It would appear that Leinier is certainly due now to rise in the chess ranks. It will be very interesting to see the tournament performance ratings after tomorrow.

I don't know if his problem is nerves, exactly. If you want to see a player whose problem is nerves, then look at Lazaro Bruzon. It was only a few years ago that Bruzon seemed to be the greater talent of the two. Dominguez's results have been very solid overall, not the kind of thing you'd expect from someone with weak nerves.

It seems to me that Dominguez's biggest weakness is that, when getting a winning position, he looks for the cleanest and clearest way to simplify down to an advantageous endgame, trusting in his endgame technique to bring the point home. Usually, of course, this works, but not always, and it sure didn't here.

If I remember correctly, Capablanca (his obvious role model) had something of the same problem, especially early in his career.

Jul-30-08  Helloween: Of course, 27.Nxh5 would have been toughest to handle(27...f5 28.Nf6+!), but even 28.g6 leads to livelier, though probably drawn play. Leinier really missed some golden opportunities, and Carlsen should be happy with the half point here.
Jul-30-08  kinggambits: I think in the case of 27.Nxh5. It seems to me that 27..f5 is the only option.

Now if
28.Nf6 Black can play 28..Rxf6 giving back the exchange.Probably followed by 29.gxf6 Rf8. Not sure if black holds after that.I think its an advantage for white though not very clear.

28.gxf6. This is also interesting as now that knight at g4 cannot be supported anymore. Continuation could be 28..Kf7 29 Qxg4 followed by the Queen trade, still white is better.

Jul-30-08  sabitsingson: <I didn't understand why the risky Dragon on a decisive game.>

Because Carlsen knows no fear.

Jul-30-08  euripides: Carlsen played the accelerated Dragon, which can be quite peaceful. Dominguez accepted the challenge and took play into the Dragon itself - a brave decision when a point ahead and playing your main rival.
Jul-30-08  Aspirador: <That's my personal evaluation from two games I have washed.> Game washing can be very costly these days under the littering act. Even worse for you if there is any suspicion of game laundering involved.

tamar: Not so. Kasparov used to bring his wash to the chess table and place it next to the board.
Jul-30-08  Kaspablanca: you mean watch, not wash.
Jul-30-08  savagerules: < tamar: Not so. Kasparov used to bring his wash to the chess table and place it next to the board. >

I hope it wasn't his dirty underwear he placed next to the board no wonder he won so many games.

Jul-31-08  grebenarov: Beautiful game! I wonder noone is mentioning that here!?
Jul-31-08  vanytchouck: To whom it may interest.

Rolfo: Magnus chose the least advangeous response for himself it seems ..
Jul-31-08  Atking: Am'I wrong? No useful <Ezzy>'s analysis this time.

<vanytchouck: To whom it may interest <Yes!>. Here is the evaluation of the sac 24.Rxh5! by Fritz 10 after 17h20 of calculation :

1.= (0,00) : 24...Qh7 25.Qe2 h4 26.Nh5 Qg6 27.Nf4 Qg7 28.Nh5 Qg6

2. = (0,00): 24...Qh8 25.Rh1 Rxc3 26.Qxc3 Ng6 27.Qd2 Nxf4 28. Qxf4 a4 29. Bc4 a3 30. bxa3 Qd4 31.Bd3 e5>

That looks incredible as Dominguez's moves were very natural. Thanks <vanytchouck> indeed very interesting test. If Black's play is correct, enough for a dynamic draw, I will say that Carlsen has completely new chess world in his mind. Did you analyse 24.a4? This is the other move which comes in mind when you replay the game

Jul-31-08  Atking: I used your move order sorry 23.a4 not 24.a4
Jul-31-08  vanytchouck: < Rolfo: Magnus chose the least advangeous response for himself it seems .. >

No, there are other moves wich are evaluated below 1,07 (i've been too lazy to write them all).

Here are some another moves :

8. (1,67) : 24...Rfe8 25.Nxh5
9. (2,27) : 24...Bc6 25. Nxh5
10. (2,74) : 24...Kh8 25. Nxh5
11. (2,77) : 24...b5 25. Nxh5

< Atking : (...) Did you analyse [23].a4? This is the other move which comes in mind when you replay the game.>

No, in fact i made the machine "analyze" 25...Qd4 26.Nce2 (as i was surprise that the move Qd4 was critisized on chessdom.com by the IMs Perunovic and Urosevic).

Of course, it's clearly losing after 26...Qxe4 (the "best" move) 27.Nxh5 (+ - 3,21) (instead of 27.Qxh5 0,32).

Now, iI've made it look at the move 23.a4 and i'll be back with its analysis.

Jul-31-08  Atking: <Now, iI've made it look at the move 23.a4 and i'll be back with its analysis.> Thanks vanytchouck !
Aug-03-08  Atking: Atking: <Now, iI've made it look at the move 23.a4 and i'll be back with its analysis.> We are Sunday now <vanytchouck !> Sorry to ask again: Did you got some evaluations after 23.a4?

Hesam7: <But, after the second rest day he felt rather out of form and his games suffered accordingly. During the game against Dominguez he "hallucinated" badly and was lucky to escape with a draw in the end.> -- Henrik Carlsen
