An Englishman: Good Evening: Wassamatta U.--frequently mentioned on the American cartoon show Rocky & Bullwinkle.
Jul-01-13  Tim Delaney: Rocky & Bullwinkle were actually an adult humor program cleverly disguised as a children's cartoon show.

Black's resignation was probably a bit late. Actually, in the end there were multiple winning lines, although the line chosen was maybe the most elegant.

Black has no defense against g4#.

44...Qg8, 45. Kh3! - see below:

a) 45... Bxh4, 46. g4+ Qxg4+, 47. Bxg4#

b) 45…Qxg3+, 46. fxg3, Bxh4 (hoping for stalemate), 47. g4# (declining the capture of the Black Bishop) 1-0

Nice game by Mahmood Lodhi!!

Jul-01-13  himadri: the queen sac is very sudden. very enjoyable game.
Jul-01-13  dunican: <SuperPatzer77> I think Black might survive a few moves longer with 44...Bf6

Domdaniel: I don't think the Queen sac, though enterprising, leads to a certain win. But in the resulting positions White has plenty of play and a draw in hand. Nice game - and White's treatment of the opening Panno variation is also interesting.

Domdaniel: "The loser is Matta, we are all Matta, and it doesn't Matta".
Jul-01-13  whiteshark: Lo! Lo clinched the Matta.
Jul-01-13  Morphys Law: <dunican>. 45. Rxf6+ Kxf6 46. d8=Q Qxd8 47. Bg5+
Jul-01-13  SuperPatzer77: < Morphys Law: <dunican>. 45. Rxf6+ Kxf6 46. d8=Q Qxd8 47. Bg5+ >

Thanks for correcting <dunican> on that.

<Morphys Law> I overlooked 44...Bf6 (only move for preventing the mating attack) but you found a line with 44...Bf6.

44...Bf6 (only move), 45. Rxf6+! Kxf6, 46. d8=Q+! Qxd8, 47. Bg5+ White wins.

Jul-01-13  kevin86: Black can avoid mate, but must lose the queen.

Didn't Bullwinkle attend Wassamatta U?

Jul-01-13  brainzugzwang: In one of the story arcs, Bullwinkle and Rocky were offered scholarships to attend Wossamatta U. after longtime losing football coach Rocky Knute (a play on legendary Notre Dame coach Knute Rockne) saw the moose toss the squirrel 100-plus yards.

Bullwinkle subsequently led Wossamatta to glorious wins over schools like the Watchmakers Institute -- "Or as it's otherwise known, Tick Tock Tech," Bullwinkle reminds us -- and the Purdy Polytechnical College, aka "Purdy Poly."

Naturally, Boris Badenov and Fearless Leader put together a team, the Mud City Manglers, to go up against our heroes. The Manglers are comprised of professional thugs but disguised as a girls team, thus getting 200-1 odds from the bookies and having Boris and F. Leader put the entire Pottsylvania national treasury down on the Manglers.

It's really one of the funniest, more sarcastic serials in the Bullwinkle and Rocky run, timely even today as it touched on gambling in sports and ethics in college athletics.

Jul-01-13  dunican: <SuperPatzer77> why correcting? There's nothing wrong with my post. You said there's mate but after 44...Bf6 there is none.
Jul-01-13  SuperPatzer77: <dunican> Yes, there is no mate but a win is a win (period) because White is two bishops up plus an outside passed pawn. Then White will mate Black eventually, anyways.

<dunican> Kudos to <Morphys Law>. Black is able to avoid getting mated but loses the game eventually.

It leads to simplication - 44...Bf6 (your idea), 45. Rxf6+! Kxf6 (forced), 46. d8=Q+! Qxd8 (forced), 47. Bg5+ White wins.

Jul-01-13  shishio71: 23...Rc8 was a blunder. It should lose to 24.RxR+ QxR 25.Rb1 and white wins the bishop
Jul-01-13  Casseb: <SuperPatzer77> But there`s still nothing wrong with <dunican>`s post.
Jul-02-13  SuperPatzer77: <Casseb> <Morphys Law> showed <Dunican> how to solve this puzzle - That's all

You're absolutely right that there's nothing wrong with his post. <Dunican> should have showed us how to solve this like <Morphys Law> did.

His line is that 44...Bf6 (only move to prevent checkmate) but Black loses anyway, Take a look at <Morphys Law>'s commentary. Why didn't <dunican> analyze this game after Black resigned?

That's why I'm glad <dunican> showed me that there was no mate but <Morphys Law> gave us an excellent solution.
