Kibitzer's Corner
Nov-10-08  ajile: This is a London System which is basically a Colle with the dark squared bishop developed outside the pawn chain.
Nov-10-08  ajile: 64.Rc6+ was a sweet move.

al wazir: Black to play is a better puzzle.
Sep-24-18  goldfarbdj: I got Rc6+, but I missed Qa6 mate. I had Qxc6 Ka7 (Ka5 66. Qb5#) 66. Qa6+ Kb8 67. Qa8 mate. Oh, well.

Penguincw: I missed it entirely. Went for 64.Qa6+, the queen sac. I wasn't looking for a queen sac, just thought it was the best. Black escapes after 64...bxa6 65.Rc6+ Ka7 (not Ka5) 66.Rxa6+ Kb7.

And it's the last Monday of the month too.

Sep-24-18  messachess: Yep. Easy peazy.

  al wazir: <goldfarbdj: I got Rc6+, but I missed Qa6 mate.>

Another way is 64. Rc6+ bxc6 65. Qb8+ Ka5 66. Qb4#.

Sep-24-18  agb2002: White has a rook and a knight for a bishop.

Black threatens mate in three.

The pawn on b7 prevents Qa6#. Hence, 64.Rc6+ bxc6 65.Qa6#.

Sep-24-18  Cheapo by the Dozen: I'm not convinced yet by the rest of the week, but this is a true Monday puzzle -- sac a heavy piece and win on the next move. :)
Sep-24-18  lost in space: I love Mondays!

64.Rc6+ bxc6 65.Qa6#

Sep-24-18  stacase: Black's b7 Pawn is preventing the White Queen from saying "Mate" from a7. So, what to do? Ah - White's Rook can say check from c6 forcing the b7 Pawn to move. Hah!

Good Monday or Tuesday stuff.

gawain: I first tried 64 Qa6+ bxa6 65 Rc6, but that did not quite work. Almost but not quite. So I switched the moves. Nice little Monday puzzle.
Sep-24-18  Autoreparaturwerkbau: Nice one-two punch Monday puzzle.

Black had an even game until <55...Be5??> abandoning a rook for no reason at all. Almost any other move is better, for example <55...Ne8>

which easily holds position in balance since after 56.Qa5+ Qa7 57.Qb4 Qd4 58.Qxd4 Bxd4 59.Ne6 Bxc3 60.Nxd8 Be1 61.Nf7 Ng7 62.Rg2 Kb8 63.Kb1 Kc7 64.Kc1 f4 65.gxf4 Bxh4 66.Kd1 Nf5 the game reaches a dead drawn position (eval. 0.00, 24 ply)

Sally Simpson: Blitz. Black giving up a Rook with a check for no trick that I can see and playing on indicates White was possibly playing with an empty time tank and on increment.

If so then the move here:

63. Qa8+

in turn indicates White saw the coming Rook c6 sac because without it.

White is lost here.

Sep-24-18  malt: 64.Rc6+, diverting the pawn and 65.Qa6#
Sep-24-18  zb2cr: 64. Rc6+ can only be met by 64. ... bxc6. White then plays 65. Qa6#. Although, as noted by <goldfarbdj> and <al wazir>, other mating nets can be constructed, they all take a bit longer.
Sep-24-18  patzer2: <goldfarbdj: I got Rc6+, but I missed Qa6 mate. I had Qxc6 Ka7 (Ka5 66. Qb5#) 66. Qa6+ Kb8 67. Qa8 mate. Oh, well.> My near identical solution 64. Rc6+ bxc6 65. Qxc6+ Ka7 (65...Ka5 66. Qa6#) 66. Qa6+ Kb8 67. Qa8# also overly complicated an easy two-move mate.

Not sure why or how I missed the simpler 64. Rc6+ bxc6 65. Qa6#.

P.S.: So where did Black go wrong?

According to the computer, Black's decisive mistake was 45...Nd6? allowing 46. Na4 b5 47. Rc1 +- (+3.70 @ 30 ply, Stockfish 9) or the game continuation 46. Rd1 +- (+2.33 @ 32 ply, Stockfish 9).

Instead, 45...Qd6 46. Rc1 Qxf4 47. Nxf4 e5 48. dxe5 Nxe5 = (+0.70 @ 34 ply, Stockfish 9) would have improved Black's drawing chances.

Earlier, instead of 37...Bc6?! potentially allowing 38. Nxh5 ⩲ (+0.45 @ 33 ply, Stockfish 9), Black could have held the position level with 37...Bc5 38. Bxc4 Nxc4 39. Nxh5 Bh6 40. Ka2 Nd2 = (-0.17 @ 31 ply, Stockfish 9).

After 38. Bxa6, playing 38...bxa6 39. d5 Ka7 40. Rc1 Bb7 = (0.00 @ 33 ply, Stockfish 9) would surely have been better than the game continuation 38...Rfd8?! 39. Bb5 ⩲ (+1.22 @ 33 ply, Stockfish 9).

Sep-24-18  lzromeu: Do it, but not
64. Rc6+ bxc6 65. Qxc6+ Ka7 66. Qa6+ Kb8 67. Qa8#

Long way

Sep-24-18  houtenton: <al wazir> you mean Qe1? Also nice indeed!
Sep-24-18  Jambow: Easy but nice thematic forcing sac with check to remove the defender of the a6 square. good for beginners to see so that they start looking for that during games.
