Mar-21-22 | | Brenin: 28 ... Nc2+ 29 Qxc2 (forced) Qe3+ 30 Qe2 Qxe2 mate. |
Mar-21-22
 | | Dionysius1: I bet this has happened to other people.
Not only do I turn up early with the right solution to discover <Brenin> got here first (yay Brenin!). I also find I've been here before, with absolutely no recollection of it. Pah! |
Mar-21-22 | | Brenin: The combination actually starts with 26 ... Rxc5, which would be a little more interesting. |
Mar-21-22 | | TheaN: <28....Nc2+ 29.Qxc2 Qe3+ 30.Qe2 Qxe2#> has no variations whatsoever and is an interesting #3. Perhaps even more interesting is that after the sub-optimal 28....Nd3+?!, Black mates similar after 29.Kf1, just a few moves later: 29....Nxf4 30.Ke1 Nxg2+ 31.Qxg2 Qe3+ 32.Qe2 Qxe2#. |
Mar-21-22 | | saturn2: 28...Nc2 wins the queen and the king |
Mar-21-22 | | saturn2: By 7 d3 white gave away a piece early |
Mar-21-22 | | Mississaugan: < JimNorCal: Thanks, <chrisowen>.> He is absent today. |
Mar-21-22 | | raymondhow: Before going with 28... Nc2+, had to look awhile at Nd3+ and make sure I wasn't missing a mate in two. Was a Tuesday puzzle before, which seems about right. |
Mar-21-22 | | raymondhow: < after the sub-optimal 28....Nd3+?!, Black mates similar after 29.Kf1, just a few moves later > but if White replies 29.Qxd3, the engine has it lasting another dozen moves or more. If Black were in time trouble, who knows... |
Mar-21-22 | | agb2002: Black has a bishop, a knight and a pawn for a rook. White is about to trade queens with Qd8+.
The white queen stops Qe3+. Hence, 28... Nc2+ 29.Qxc2 Qe3+ 30.Qe2 Qxe2#. |
Mar-21-22 | | paavoh: Not straightforward but pretty neat for a Monday. Hesitated first between 28.- Nd3+ and 28.- Nc2+ and then saw the mate with the latter. |
Mar-21-22
 | | Teyss: Despite what other users think and the fact it was a Tuesday POTD in 2018, it's a real Monday level. Thought process:
1. The White pieces don't threaten anything so it's a cool puzzle, mate.
2. The WK cannot move so if Black gives check it's mate, mate (the interference on e2 is useless).
3. Available checks are Qe3, Qf2, Nd3 and Nc2, all guarded by the WQ, as well as Qg1. So if I can deflect her it's 0-1: the only move removing the guard is Nc2+ (after checking the Q sacks don't work). |
Mar-21-22 | | TheaN: <raymondhow: but if White replies 29.Qxd3, the engine has it lasting another dozen moves or more. If Black were in time trouble, who knows...> I know taking the knight is objectively better but also obviously lost, and I don't think there's any reasonable way Black loses on time unless he has like three seconds on the clock without increment, and even then I doubt it (there's a lot of moves to 'waste' in Q+B:R to reach 40). That's why I added White playing 29.Kf1, as that would be a line some looked at. |
Mar-21-22 | | TheaN: Oh, no, wait, it's even worse for White after 29.Qxd3 Bxd3 30.Kd2 (nothing else to prevent Qe3+) Ne4+! forces 31.Kxd3 else Black mates still, and after 31....Nf2+ 32.Kd2 Nxh1, White doesn't even have the firepower left (just a full queen down) to even threaten anything. |

Mar-21-22 | | King.Arthur.Brazil: It is immediate that after 27...♘c2+, the ♕ leaves the e3 protection, then forced to 28.♕xc2 ♕e3+ and check mate next. I wonder if White did noticed that 28. ♕d4 ♘d3+ 29. ♔e3 ♘d5+ 30. ♔e2 ♕c2+ 31. ♔f1 ♕d1+ 32. ♘e1 ♕xe1# as well. But this line is longer than that of game. In the case of 29. ♔g1(or {Kg3) Ne2+ wins the ♕. And finally, for 29. ♔f1 ♘xe5+ 30. ♔f2 ♘g4+ 31. ♔g1 ♕xe1#. |
Mar-21-22 | | JohnBoy: I immediately saw 28…Nd3+ 29.Kf1 Ne4, not even bothering to consider 29.Qd3. Winning, yes. But the text is 1000 times better. |
Mar-21-22 | | johnnydeep: Saw it all the way through mate straight away. Off to a good start for a change! |

 | | gawain: Solved pretty easily.
I see that I've been here before. I do not remember that occasion, but maybe some little platoon of my brain cells recognized the position. |
Mar-21-22 | | Damenlaeuferbauer: After long thinking, the British candidate master Nick Faulks, who plays for the proud nation of Bermuda, finally found the mate in 3 moves with the nice knight sacrifice 28.-,Nc2+! 29.Qxc2,Qe3+ 30.Qe2,Qxe2#. |
Mar-21-22 | | GlennOliver: 28…Nd3+ wins by force, so sufficed for those of us who were too lazy to look for a more elegant mate. |
Mar-21-22 | | Lloyd Gross: <Brenin: The combination actually starts with 26 ... Rxc5, which would be a little more interesting.> Exactly. That would make it for a Thursday. |
Mar-21-22 | | Refused: 28...Nc2+ froces mate. I am too lazy to give the line, but it's a strightforward forced line. Still, a bit more thought required than for your average slow monday. |
Mar-21-22 | | Halldor: The White King is in stalemate position. Therefore, my first thought was to find if any of the white pieces was overworked — and the Queen proved to be. A decent Monday level. |
Mar-21-22 | | whiteshark: <28...Nc2+ 29.Qxc2 Qe3+ 30.Qe2 Qxe2#>, and that's it. |
