Sep-05-18 | | lost in space: Easy for a Wednesday.
29...Rxe5 30. fxe5 (30. dxe5 Qxd3) 30...Nf2 and White can not avoid mate with 31. Qg2 |

Yeah, if that guy's a professional punster he should definitely consider a korea change. > I was waiting to see a sound bite for "Rocket Man" posted by <lost in space> |
Sep-05-18 | | PJs Studio: I like this combination a lot! Black can whip up an attack many different ways in this position and the absolute quickest method is Rxe5! first.
Very nice combo by South Korea’s only GM. |
Mar-22-22 | | Brenin: Qg2 mate is Black's ambition, and 29 ... Nf2 would block White's Q from defending that square, but 30 Kxc2 Qg2+ 31 Ke3 is no good. Therefore 29 ... Rxe5 first, and 30 fxe5 (30 dxe5 Qxd3) allows Black's B to prevent Ke3, so 31 ... Nc2 31 Kxc2 (nothing else works) Qg2 mate. |
Mar-22-22 | | TheaN: I'd like to add to <Brenin> that the key of needing <29....Rxe5!> first, is the fact that one, Bh6 covers e3 as mentioned, but two, it doesn't allow White to play dxe5 because the d-pawn is pinned. After 30.fxe5 Nf2 #6 seals the deal as mate is unavoidable after the loss of some pieces. Instead, 29....Nf2? 30.Kxf2 Qg2+ 31.Ke3 Rxe5+ 32.dxe5 +-. Can White do much else? Not really, the ship's sailed after RxN. The rook's immune, and a counterattack doesn't necessarily stop Nf2. Ie, 30.Rc7? Nf2! still, and now the rook's eyeing e3. 31.Rxf7+ Qxf7 -+. I guess the only reasonable alternative is <30.Qc4>, putting pressure on the queen to defuse the mate threat. After <30....Nd6>, White doesn't have much better than <31.Qxd5 Rxd5 -+>. |

 | | An Englishman: Good Evening: Only an easy Tuesday two-mover, but really beautiful. Have to lead off with the game move to force the f-pawn out of the way of the Bh6. |
Mar-22-22 | | raymondhow: I took too long flailing about over various knight moves before finding 29...Rxe5. |
Mar-22-22 | | saturn2: 29...Rxe5 30.Qc4 and white can play with R for N and 2 B. Lost of course 29...Ng5 wins too. The Ng5 is tabu and threatens the fork Nf3.
So 30.Re2 But the Bf5 followed by Nh3 |
Mar-22-22 | | agb2002: Black has the bishop pair for a rook and two pawns. White threatens Qxe4.
The first idea that comes to mind is 29... Nf2 but White has 30.Qf3. Therefore, 29... Rxe5: A) 30.fxe5 Nf2 wins (31.Kxf2 Qg2#).
B) 30.Qc4 Qxc4 31.Rxc4 Nd2 32.Rxe5 Nxc4 wins decisive material. C) 30.dxe5 Qxd3 wins. |
Mar-22-22 | | saturn2: Instead of 20.Bxe4 20.Rxe4 was better with Rh4 later |
Mar-22-22 | | cocker: 29 ... Ng5 also wins, so not exactly easy. |

Mar-22-22 | | Nosnibor: I agree that 29...Rxe5 is the quickest method of winning but what first occurred to me was 29...Ng5 which eventually leads to a superior end game for Black. |

 | | scormus: Oh dear, missed out on a Tuesday POTD :(
I looked at 29 ... Nf2 and satisfied myself that B had some advantage (30 Kxf2 Qg2+ 31 Ke3 Qxh2) though no clear win. Didn't look properly at 29 ... Rxe5 first, missed that 30 fxe5 leaves the WK with no safe haven after 30 ... Nf2 31 Kxf2 Qg2+ etc. |
Mar-22-22 | | Hercdon: Hoping to play Nf2 first. Off by one move |
Mar-22-22 | | johnnydeep: Yeah, also I tried the Nf2 move immediately instead of first clearing the diagonal for the bishop. |
Mar-22-22 | | King.Arthur.Brazil: White went into an unjustified attack, where his ♘ at h6 was hanging and Black wins the quality ♖ by 2 minor pieces. The refutation comes with 28... ♘e5! when the ♕ has no place to defend simultaneously the two threats: ♙d4 and the mate on g2.
The other answer lose as well: 29. ♕e3 ♖xe5 30. dxe5 ♘g5 31. ♕f2 ♘f3+ 32. ♔h1 ♘xe1+ 33. ♔g1 ♘f3+ 34. ♔h1 ♕e4 35. ♖d1 ♘d4+ 36. ♔g1 ♘e2+ etc. |

Mar-22-22 | | Mississaugan: I see that <chrisowen> is present, and as usual expressing his expertise on how to solve the puzzle of the day. It is sad that we couldn't laud his effort for the merits this could have. |
Mar-22-22 | | Mississaugan: I really believe that <chrisowen> is a strong chess player or he might be even a grandmaster who has lost his marbles, which has afflicted some notable chess players in the past. |

 | | gawain: Like many of you I tried and tried to find the winning knight move, then gave up on that. With different perspective it dawned on me that the rook capture forces a win quickly. Have I seen this puzzle somewhere before? |
