Kibitzer's Corner
Nov-19-08  shintaro go: The line Wesley chose played into the hands of the Spanish team. It was very drawish and the tricks Wesley tried were not going to work against a veteran tactician like Shirov. Clearly this is not one of Wesley's best lines against the Sicilian. For me, the White bishop is very important in any White attack and the Rossolimo has a reputation of being quite drawish. Also, the trick 14.Bh6 won't even pass even for sub 2400 players, let alone Shirov. Very surprising choice by Wesley there.

Strongest Force: The game went from a Rossilimo to a stonewall Dragon. The youngster was wise to play safe with 0-0 otherwise Shirov would have been happy with the more traditional ways white might have tried. So will be a top ten player before he is out of his teens.
Nov-20-08  rjsolcruz: The Bb5 Bishop may be a recommendation of Team Captain GM Eugene Torre, who made a living with it. With GM Shirov's elite stature, a drawish strategy is a good strategy.
Nov-20-08  shintaro go: <Strongest Force> I hope you are not implying it will take him 4 more years to reach top 10 as he is only 15 right now. Maybe when Wesley's 17 he'll break 2700 already.

Strongest Force: You are probably right, shintaro. He has the talent to follow in Carlsen's footsteps but it wont be a crime if he does it at 21.
Nov-26-08  wollkay: yes.. maybe so may break into 2700 if the philippines will funded him! and that would be impossible because politicians here are too busy on the coming election!!!!!
Nov-26-08  VinnyRoo2002: I think Wesley has all the talent in the world, but I will say he won't reach top ten within four years. He has a ways to go still and don't forget there all a lot of other talented young players. I'm not saying it's impossible, I'm just predicting it won't happen. He isn't Carlsen.
Nov-27-08  shintaro go: <VinnyRoo2002> I respect your opinion and I agree that there are other talented players in the world. A lot of things can happen in four years, and based on the progress that Wesley's been making, it wouldn't be a miracle if he ever does make it to the top ten. Obviously, crossing 2700 is the top priority but that too doesn't mean as much as it did 5 years ago. 2700 just doesn't automatically make you an elite player. But hey, the beauty of it is that Wesley just turned 15. He has tons of time to catch up with the best of the world and I wouldn't bet against him getting to the top ten someday.
Dec-28-08  timhortons: <strongestforce> its a crime if he does it at 21.

he just hold karjakin to a draw in asian club competition.

that means he could hold his own against any body at 2700 rating and hes going there before 16 year old!

a 2700 master like karjakin ,shirov, and nihua are somebody who wont give you a chance to level off if you commit mistake during a game.

its either you play it right or get busted.

Jan-01-09  gopi11: Vinny could be right, Wesley is not Carlsen, but in a different way. Magnus has the logistics and he's geographically situated were he can match wits against the game's elites everyday, if he chooses so, but not if we're talking skills wise. With the way Wesley's game is progressing, he's bound to break 2700 later this year, or early next year (2010), and don't forget that Wesley won't turn 16 until October, which is a good 10 months away. Magnus broke the 2700 barrier at the age of 16 years and 9 months, Wesley can top that, and it showed with the way he's playing against these Super GMs ( Hua (2710), Shirov (2746), Karjakin (2730) and Wang Hao (2696).
Jan-03-09  e4e5: <<VinnyRoo2002: He isn't Carlsen>>

Yeah, right. Wesley's improvement is a lot faster than Carlsen considering that he doesn't have the same logistics. I bet that if you give Wesley the same exposure and support, he will beat Carlsen for sure.

Just like some other fans hoping that their idol wear the World Chess Crown.

Nov-11-12  SugarDom: The difference is, we await with bated breath, while they wait with bad breath.:)
