 | | al wazir: I would have played 21. e4. That probably wins the ♕. At a minimum it puts tremendous pressure on black. |
|
May-03-18 | | Big Pawn: Evgeni Ellinovich Sveshnikov - Is the middle name so necessary? As if we don't know who Evgeni Sveshnikov is? And the other guy too, with the long middle name. It must be someone's brainchild to decide that <CG> MUST put in all the middle names, as if that improves the site or something. Somehow I find it so unnecessary. |

 | | piltdown man: If they didn't show these Soviet middle names, we wouldn't know the names of their fathers. But now we do. |
|
May-03-18 | | stst: Because of the "pin" of P-Q on f, but the P is guarded by the Q on d7, and the a4-P taking the B, so one course might be like this;
31.Bxa4 Kd8
32.Bxd7 NxB
33.Rxf5 Qg6
34.Bg5+ Kc7
35.Qa5+ Kc8
36.Qa8+ Kc7
37.Rb5 e3
38.Qb7#
will see.... |
|
May-03-18 | | stst: <middle names..> important.. like middle game!!
Even in US, many people hide their origin with the middle name...
even local Am, might be at home, they refer each other with their middle names!! And often, first, middle, last all could be one another, e.g.
Evan Paul George
any one can be first, middle, or last...
people like this kind of game...
and, that's pretty true with the (chess) game!! |
|
May-03-18 | | saturn2: I wanted to play 31 Qa8. And if
a. 31..Qd8 then 32 Bf7 Ke7 33 Bg5
b. 31..Ke7 then 32 Rf1 |
|
May-03-18 | | agb2002: White has a rook for a knight and two pawns.
Black threatens axb3.
The bishop on d7 protects the pawns on a4 and f5. This suggests 31.Bxa4: A) 31... Bxa4 32.Rxf5
A.1) 32... Qe6 33.Rxf8+ Kd7 (33... B(K)xf8 34.Qxe6 wins; 33... Ke7 34.Re8+ wins) 34.Rd7+ Ke7 35.Re8+ wins. A.2) 32... Qe7 33.Bg5
A.2.a) 33... Qa7(g7) 34.Qxd6 and Black doesn't have a good defense against Qd8#. A.2.b) 33... Qc7 34.Qa8+ Kd7 (34... Qb8 35.Qxa4+ Qb5 36.Qxb5#) 35.Rf7+ wins. A.2.c) 33... Qd7 34.Qa8+ and mate in two.
A.2.d) 33... Qe6 34.Rxf8+ as in A.1.
A.3) 32... Qg6 33.Qa8+
A.3.a) 33... Kd7 34.Qxa4+ ends up an exchange ahead. For example, 34... Ke6 35.Rg5 (35.Rf1 e3+) 35... Qf6 36.Qe8+ with a won wnding. A.3.b) 33... Ke7 34.Bg5+ Kd7 35.Qxa4+
A.3.b.i) 35... Kc8 36.Qc6+ Kb8 (36... Bc7 37.Rxf8+ and mate next) 37.Rb5+ and mate next. A.3.b.ii) 35... Ke6 36.Rf6+ wins decisive material. A.3.b.iii) 35... Kc7 36.Rf7+ wins (36... Qxf7 37.Qa7+ and 38.Qxf7; 36... Kb6 37.Bd8+ and mate soon; 36... Kb(c)8 37.Qe8#). A.3.c) 33... Bb8 34.Qxb8+ Kd7 (34... Ke7 35.Qxf8+ wins) 35.Qb7+ Ke8 (35... Ke6 36.Qd5+ Ke7 37.Bg5+ wins) 36.Qc8+ wins. A.4) 32... Qg7 33.Qa8+
A.4.a) 33... Kd7 34.Qxa4+ as in A.3.a.
A.4.b) 33... Ke7 34.Bg5+ Kd7 (34... Ke6 35.Qd5+ Kd7 36.Rf7+ wins decisive material) 35.Qxa4+ Ke6 (35... Kc8 36.Qe8+ and 37.Rf7+ wins; 35... Kc7 36.Qa7+ and 37.Qxg7 wins) 36.Rf6+ wins decisive material. A.5) 32... Qh8 33.Qxd6 with material advantage and a winning attack. B) 31... Qe7 32.Bxd7+ and 33.Qxf5 wins decisive material. |

May-03-18 | | morfishine: I actually found <31.Bxa4> Very nice combination *Between the two of them, they must've set some sort of record for the number of letters in their names ***** |
|
May-03-18 | | malt: Went for deflection first 31.Bg5 Q:g5 32.Qf7+ , then for
31.B:a4 B:a4
(31...Qe6 32.Qa8+ Ke7 33.Bg5+ Kf7 34.Bb3 )
32.R:f5 Qg6 33.Qa8+ Ke7 34.Bg5+ Ke6 35.Qd5+ Kd7 36.Rf632...Kd7 33.Qb7+ Bc7 34.Rd5+ Ke6 35.Rg5 Qf6 36.Qd5+ Ke7 37.B:b4+ as far as I got |

May-03-18 | | malt: Me thinks <agb2002> might have a tad better post than mine. |
|
May-03-18 | | WorstPlayerEver: I went for the fast lane: 31. Qxe4+ fxe4 32. Rxf6 axb3 33. Rxd6 and White has a winning endgame. |

I didn't see that either.

May-03-18 | | WorstPlayerEver: PS not bad, considered there are engines tactics which I rather try to avoid. SF9: 31. Bxa4 e3 32. Rxf5 Qxf5+ 33. Qxf5 exd2 34. Bxd7+ Nxd7 35. Kc2 b3+ 36. axb3 d1=Q+ 37. Kxd1 Kd8 In other words: noblesse oblige. Because one cannot say they solved the puzzle without considering moves as 31... e3 in a human sense :) |
|
May-03-18 | | ChessHigherCat: I saw last night that 31. Bxa4+ Bxa4 32. Rxf5 was the only promising combination but it I was hoping the follow-up would be clearer in the morning. Unfortunately I can't do these puzzles from Thursday onward in my head without a PGN viewer, which means they're kind of an academic exercise. |
|
May-03-18 | | lasker27: Why not 31.Qa8+ Qd8 32.Bf7+ Ke7 33.Bg5+? Seems quicker. |
|
May-03-18 | | schachfuchs: I only got the first move 31.Bxa4 but did not consider all the replies
31....e3, 31...Qg6, 31....f4 beside 31...Bxa4, not to mention all the branching form there on! Also the (weaker) game move 32...Qg7 was not on my list.
So, how that counts? |
|
May-03-18 | | wtpy: Mark me as one who missed it-- settled for endgame advantage with Qe4. Ba4 was nice shot; I considered the move but did not consider Rf5 which was its point. |
|
May-03-18 | | Marmot PFL: Pretty complicated solution, probably would have played 31 Qa8+ and Bxa4. |
|
May-03-18 | | Carlos0012358: <lasker27: Why not 31.Qa8+ Qd8 32.Bf7+ Ke7 33.Bg5+? Seems quicker.> Because after 31.Qa8, 31.....Qd8 is a bad move.. 32.Bf7+ KxF7 and black looses the Q and the game If instead 32.Ke7 then 32.....Bg5+ also looses the Q and the game. |
|
May-03-18 | | Oxspawn: <Big Pawn: Middle names Somehow I find it so unnecessary>
But then do you need to be <Big> pawn, when your atavar already proclaims you as a pawn star? We should probably tolerate each other's naming conventions! |
