Kibitzer's Corner
Dec-18-08  KingG: Maybe 8.Qb3 should be known as the Azeri Variation, since it seems to have been revived mainly by players from that country. A couple of other games are Radjabov vs J Rowson, 2004 and R Mamedov vs D Kokarev, 2008.

Gashimov has now played 8.Qb3 three times(with a score of +1 =2), Mamedov twice(+2), and Radjabov once(+1).

Of course, Radjabov has also been instrumental in reviving the ancient line 8.Qd2, 10.e5, 12.Ne4, that is probably the current main line in the Poisoned Pawn and the line that has helped rekindle interest in the whole 6.Bg5 variation at the top level, with most players choosing alternatives to the Poisoned Pawn. I think this 8.Qd3 idea is also very dangerous, and a further reason to avoid 7...Qb6.

Dec-18-08  Mulyahnto: Tragic...

37. ... Nf2?
38. ... Bxe2?
39. ... Ng4?
40. ... Ne5?

Dec-18-08  zoren: 8.Qb3 is an illegal move KingG

Dec-19-08  stoy: Is the game score correct? Like 20. Kh1 ??
Dec-19-08  pacer: yes 20.Kh1 Bd4 21.Qb4!
Dec-19-08  KingG: <zoren> Yeah, I meant 8.Qd3 of course. Don't know why I wrote 8.Qb3.
Dec-19-08  WaxTadpole: Not only is 8.Qb3 illegal, it also hangs the knight at d4. If you're going to cheat, you just have to do better than this.
Dec-26-08  znprdx: 20.....Bx[N]d4 probably Qb4 attacking R at f8 ..a mate threat...so regaining the the piece and control of the game

BTW Pinch me if I’m dreaming – but isn’t 39..Qa6 playable (40.Rx[Q]a6 Rb1+ )if 40.Rxe3 Rx[R]e3. Even ...39.R(b)d8 looks better than the text...
