Kibitzer's Corner
Dec-29-08  Funicular: I considered Nh5+ right away and looked 4 or 5 moves into it. It doesnīt lead to a rather OBVIOUS mating or material winning pattern, though. IMHO itīs *NOT* "Very Easy" to find a combination that takes over 10 moves *ONLY* to have a R+P vs B+N THEORETICALLY WON kind of ending. Certainly not a puzzle you would expect for a monday.

Cheers

Dec-29-08  Amulet: I miss this one. My first move was the knight move to f5+.
Dec-29-08  Nullifidian: I have to second Funicular's comment. The only easy thing about this puzzle was that Nh5+ followed by Qg5+ and Qf6+ was obvious, but there is no immediately clear victory. This ought to have been a Friday puzzle at the very least.
Dec-29-08  nimzo knight: Hmmm... so in this holiday week all days are Sunday. Cg.com whats up, yesterday's puzzle with h4!! kind of left everyone confused and today's defensive ..h4 definitely doesnt make it a Monday puzzle.
Dec-29-08  TrueBlue: I saw the first 4 1/2 moves, but I thought it was too complicated for a Monday and kept searching for something else .... More like Friday material I would say
Dec-29-08  TrueBlue: ok, I was able to get a hold of CG and asked them what's with these difficult puzzles lately. The secretary told me that everybody is on vacation for the Christmas holidays and that Topalov has agreed to find and post the puzzles during the period.
Dec-29-08  cmpcmp: I found through 27.Ra3 (with the idea of Rg3), saw that e5 (threatening the h7 pawn) could be played at some point, recognized that at the very least I could draw by perpetual check, that all of blacks pieces are very far from the action, and that his bishop can't easily defend because of the e4 pawn. Can I claim to have solved this *Monday* puzzle?

chessgames.com: This puzzle was shown by accident, the real puzzle for today is the much simpler H Karner vs Mass, 1971. This one was a rejected Sunday puzzle. (Or possibly rejected -- we couldn't get our computers confirmation to prove the win decisively, but maybe it's sound.) It is an interesting position anyhow, consider this the alternate Sunday puzzle for the week.
