pbernh: Just curious if anyone has ideas why black didn't go: 17...Bxc3, 18.bxc3 Qxc3 (19. Bf4)

Bears092: perhaps the exf7+ in-between move was causing him trouble. If 17...Bxc3, then 18. exf7+ couldn't be met with a capture (else black loses an exchange or is mated).

whiteshark: Wang Yue surprised Levon Aronian in the Slav, playing a variation the Armenian did not expect.

After achieving nothing from the opening, Aronian tried to rely on his strong e-pawn to weaken black’s kingside, but <18...Qe5!>

forced the trade of queens and shifted the initiative black’s way.

Possibly, black should have opted for <21...Rad8!?> with a promising position.

The game led to a position where black managed to surround the e-pawn and win it, but white’s bishop pair was enough to hold the draw.
