Many moves have been tried here, the most popular being 12...exd4. Chigorin played 12...h6> 13.d5 Na5 14.Ba2 Bd7 15.Ba3 Qe8 16.Qd3 Bxa4 17.Bb4 Nb7 18.Qxa6 Bb5 19.Qa7 c5 20.dxc6 <20.Ba3? Na5 and the Queen is in for a bumpy ride> 20...Bxc6 21.Nbd2 Qd8 22.Qe3 Qc7 23.Bb3 Ra8 24.Ra7 Rxa7 25.Qxa7 Rc8 26.Nc4< With idea's of pressure on the f7 pawn with 27 Ng5 and eyeing the d6 pawn.> 26...Bd8 <26...Nxe4? 27.Nb6 Bf6 (27...Re8 28.Nd5 Bxd5 29.Bxd5 Nxc3 30.Bxc3 Qxc3 31.Qxb7 Is probably winning for someone of Nigel's class) 28.Nxc8 Qxc8 Advantage to white; 26...Bxe4? 27.Nb6 Bxf3 28.Nxc8 Qxc8 29.gxf3 Advantage to white> 27.Nfd2 h6 28.Qa3 Ne8 29.Qa2 <Keeping a beady eye on the f7 pawn. Nigel does seem to chipping away at Werle's position, but it's quite solid at the moment.> 29...Bg5< With idea's of 30...Nf6 and big pressure on the e4 pawn.> 30.Nf3 Bf6 31.Qc2 Be7 32.Nh2 Nf6 33.Ng4 Nxg4 34.hxg4 Nc5 35.Bxc5 dxc5 36.Ne3 Bg5 37.Nd5 Qa7 38.Bc4 Bd7 39.f3 Rb8 40.Rb1 Rxb1+ 41.Qxb1 Be6 42.Kh2 Bxd5 43.exd5 Be7 44.g3 1/2-1/2 < And the position fizzles out where nobody can make any important progress.>

A comfortable start to the tournament for Nigel, who always had a slight initiative, but not enough to give Werle any heart murmors.
