Feb-02-09  GiovanniMacchia: I would play Nf6 to enter into a Nimzo Indian system... to control the centre.
Feb-02-09  Eurotrash: <smitten>While there definitely are some sharp lines in the QGA, there are also drawing lines for white.

Beliavsky vs Karjakin, 2006

Not that I think Umansky will go for something like that =)

Feb-02-09  blacksburg: c'mon you guys, dutch, 1...f5! c'mon, it'll be fun!

lots of cool people have played the dutch!

T Lichtenhein vs Morphy, 1857

  Roemer: Why not 1... Nf6, keeping our options open?
Feb-02-09  crazymate: Analysis by Fritz 11: 2238 m nodes.

At depth 20 fritz 11 changed over from d4 d5 to d4 Nf6.

It switched from d4 d5 (KID) to (Slav defense) for black at depth 20. It may take my slow computer a long time to reach 21 depth but its playing quite nice with the Fritz 11 2008 opening powerbook loaded.

1. = (0.11): 1...Nf6 2.Nc3 d5 3.Nf3 Nc6 4.g3 g6 5.Bg2 Bg7 6.0-0 0-0 7.Ne5 Bf5 8.Bf4 Ne4 9.Nxe4 dxe4

I really wanted to see d5 win.. and it was winning till depth 20. perhaps it will move back up at 21. I'd put this as #3 favorite answer to d4. but i'm only 1500 rated so maybe i need to start playing Nf6 more.

2. = (0.16): 1...d5 2.c4 e6 3.Nf3 Nf6 4.Nc3 Nc6 5.e3 Be7 6.Bd2 0-0 7.Be2 h6 8.0-0 Bd7 9.h3 Re8 10.cxd5

(the World team - Hero's Line)

3. (0.42): 1...e6 2.e4 d5 3.Nc3 dxe4 4.Nxe4 Nf6 5.Bd3 Nxe4 6.Bxe4 f5 7.Bd3 c5 8.Nf3 Nc6 9.Be3 Qb6 10.0-0 Qxb2

The French Resistance is still losing. but is moving up the charts at 20 depth.

4. (0.43): 1...Nc6 2.d5 Ne5 3.Nf3 d6 4.Nc3 Nf6 5.Bf4 Ng6 6.Bg3 c6 7.dxc6 bxc6 8.Qd3 Qa5 9.0-0-0 Rb8 10.e4 Qb4

5. (0.49): 1...c5 2.d5 g6 3.Nc3 Nf6 4.e4 d6 5.Nf3 Bg7 6.Bc4 Nbd7 7.0-0 0-0 8.Bf4 Nb6 9.Bb5 a6 (Sicilian Gambit. Very Nice- this would have been my #2 line.)

Feb-02-09  paavoh: A solid 1.- d5 should be OK.

Because GM Umansky's favorite opening is the Catalan. By playing d5 we avoid it and we also steer the game into this variation

1.d4 d5 2.c4 c6 3.Nf3 Nf6 4.Nc3 e6 <5.g3>

which is what GM Umansky usually plays in this position and what may be considered inferior to 5.e3 or 5.Bg5

Feb-02-09  blacksburg: dutch...dutch...dutch...dutch...dutch...dutch
Feb-02-09  spirit: 1...d5
Feb-02-09  crazymate: Analysis by Fritz 11: 4864 M nodes 21 depth.

1. = (0.08): 1...d5 2.c4 e6 3.Nf3 Nf6 4.Nc3 Nc6 5.Bd2 Bd6 6.c5 Be7 7.g3 0-0 8.Bg2 b6 9.cxb6 axb6 10.0-0 Ne4

The Hero's Line Takes the lead again.

2. = (0.12): 1...Nf6 2.Nf3 d5 3.c4 e6 4.Nc3 Nc6 5.Bd2 Bd6 6.c5 Be7 7.g3 0-0 8.Bg2 b6

The KID improved for black as well at 21 depth..

3. (0.34): 1...e6 2.e4 d5 3.exd5 exd5 4.Nf3 Bb4+ 5.c3 Bd6 6.Bd3 Nf6 7.0-0 0-0 8.Re1 Nc6 9.Na3

The Ever Improving French Defense.
Gains More ground.. Ja Ja.. Where is da German Defense..

4. (0.45): 1...Nc6 2.d5 Ne5 3.Nf3 Nxf3+ 4.exf3 Nf6 5.Nc3 e5 6.dxe6 fxe6 7.Bd3 Bc5 8.Be3 Qe7 9.0-0 0-0 10.f4 Bxe3

Queen's Knight Defense - The idea with Nc6 is to push e5. the computer seizes the oppertunity to play d5 and displace our knight.

5. (0.55): 1...f5 2.Nf3 Nf6 3.g3 e6 4.Bg2 Nc6 5.0-0 d5 6.c4 dxc4 7.Qa4 Bd7 8.Qxc4 Bd6 9.Nc3

Dutch moves up to #5.

6. (0.60): 1...c5 2.d5 g6 3.Nc3 Nf6 4.e4 d6 5.Nf3 Bg7 6.Bc4 Nbd7 7.0-0 0-0 8.Bf4 Nh5 9.Bg5 Old Benoni with a computer mutation into a kings indian structure.

Feb-02-09  fierychess: 1...Nf6 ia a fighting move as it can lead to a different types of position.
Feb-02-09  castor: I think we have to play 1... Nf6.
Feb-02-09  blacksburg: <1...f5 ia a fighting move as it can lead to a different types of position.>

<I think we have to play 1...f5.>

No. 4...e6 and the Semi-Slav, better winning chances for black than the Slav with 4...dxc4.

Very well put and if he should play the stronger 5.e3 or 5.Bg5, we still get a great game with the Meran, the Moscow variation, or maybe even the Shirov-Shabalov Attack, all fun to play with black.

Feb-02-09  Waitaka: 1...d5 for me.

Because I expect to learn more about the Queen Gambit, GMMU favorit response after 1.d4 d5

  pocketmaniac: Running an analysis engine after one move (d4) is worthless. I vote for Nf6, but d5 is fine also.
Feb-02-09  Pyke: I voted 1. ...d5, too. Seems to be the most reasonable approach.
Feb-02-09  Lohad: il prefer 1... d5, and on 2.c4, i never accept queen gambit
Feb-02-09  cyrus5.3: I like g6 because of its flexibility!
Feb-02-09  blacksburg: <pyke> nooooo!!!! your avatar is botvinnik! you, of all people, should vote for the dutch! 1...f5!
Feb-02-09  crazymate: Analysis by Fritz 11: 20340 Mnodes searched. 23 depth..

1. = (0.16): 1...Nf6 2.Nf3 g6 3.Nc3 d5 4.Bf4 Bg7 5.g3 Nc6 6.Bg2 0-0 7.0-0 Ne4 8.Ne5 Bf5 9.Nxe4 dxe4 10.Nxc6

Indian defense - very popular.

2. = (0.22): 1...d5 2.c4 dxc4 3.e3 Nf6 4.Bxc4 g6 5.Nc3 Bg7 6.Nf3 0-0 7.0-0 Nc6 8.e4 Bg4 9.Be3

Computer Broke d5 at 23 ply. It went into this Queens Gambit accepted.. If d5 is played we're probably going into the slav and not this line.

3. (0.34): 1...e6 2.e4 d5 3.Nc3 dxe4 4.Nxe4 Nf6 5.Bd3 Nxe4 6.Bxe4 f5 7.Bf3 Nc6 8.Ne2 Bd6 9.0-0 0-0 10.c3 Bd7

The French Resistance - still improving.. e6 is a quiet, yet resilent way of starting up the chaos.

4. (0.46): 1...Nc6 2.d5 Ne5 3.e4 e6 4.Nf3 Bb4+ 5.Nc3 Qf6 6.dxe6 fxe6 7.a3 Bxc3+ 8.bxc3 d5 9.Nd4 dxe4 10.Nb5 Qf7

Queens Knights Defense - a nice way to start the game. but maybe it creates its own set of problems to work out.

5. (0.53): 1...c5 2.d5 g6 3.Nc3 Nf6 4.e4 d6 5.Nf3 Bg7 6.Bc4 Nbd7 7.0-0 0-0 8.Bf4 Nh5 9.Bg5 Ne5

I really like c5 but not this exact computer line.. It sends a threatening message to white. Old Benoni structure. note if dxc5 Qa5+ wins back the pawn whenever and we can play Nf6 and other moves as well. Its not as bad as the computer makes it out to be and even if the computer line gets played.. black is not losing anything.

Feb-02-09  Waitaka: <blacksburg: <pyke> nooooo!!!! your avatar is botvinnik! you, of all people, should vote for the dutch! 1...f5!>

So, looking at your avatar, what would you play? 1...g5? 1...a5? 1...Nh6?

(disclaimer: this is just a joke)

Feb-02-09  Woody Wood Pusher: < crazymate: Analysis by Fritz 11: 20340 Mnodes searched. 23 depth..>

You are getting the computer to analyze the opening from the second ply?

Please tell me you are joking...

  kb2ct:

Nf6 for the poll.

I would rather play a Kings Indian modern or Queens Indian than a Slav or a Catalan.

I have found that I have zero influence on opening choice.
