Gilmoy: Aaah! The alternating light and dark sides of Ivanchuk's dancing face are distracting me like a strobe light! I feel an overwhelming urge to play 1.d4!

  hedgeh0g: CHUCKSTER!!!
Jan-25-09  Salaskan: Chucky is just so unpredictable. After throwing away two games due to time trouble and losing one by taking an excessive risk, he bounces back with a brilliant victory that is reminiscent of his past winning streaks.

While it was a difficult position with many opportunities to go wrong, he played almost flawlessly. After 23.b5!! Chucky played a series of forced moves ending with 29.Rb6 that left Karjakin completely helpless.

It's unlikely that Ivanchuk will be able to make up for his bad performance in the first few rounds, but I'd like to see more of these games :)

28...Rd7? was a tactical oversight that Ivanchuk could have capitalised upon with 29.Rxe6! Nxe6 30.Bxc4 Kf7 31. exf5 when he wins easily with a bishop pair+pawn against a rook. Both players, however, were correct to see that 31.Bxf8 Kxf8 32.a6! bxa6 (to allow the white rook to come onto the a file later) 33.Rxe6 Rd2! 34.Kf2 Rxc2 35.Rxa6 would probably be drawn, because white has to sacrifice his bishop for one of the two pawns.

hms123: <Salskan> <30...Rd1+> is better, and the win is not so easy.

KingG: Of all the people Ivanchuk had to play well against, why did it have to be Karjakin?

shr0pshire: When I go on streaks of losing what may seem like countless games, and then I have a couple of good games in me. I like to think I have a little Chucky in me.

Playing well or not, Chucky is someone who I can relate to on the chessboard.

Good question.

Oh, btw, you'll find commentary on this boring game at http://karjakin.blogspot.com/

Jan-25-09  FrogC: Full marks to Karjakin for sportsmanship. Generous appreciation of his opponent's play on the blog.
Jan-25-09  Augalv: <FrogC> That's not Karjakin's blog, it's a blog about him. <Warheart> is the creator, those are his words.
Jan-26-09  positionalgenius: one of the best games so far this year, a real nice positional win.
Jan-26-09  M.D. Wilson: A great game. 23.b5 is strong. A great way to start the attack.

Ulhumbrus: With 23 b5 Ivanchuk gains the bishop pair and a permanent advantage with it, an advantage which he keeps until he wins the game.
