Apr-06-09  rjsolcruz: The late GM Balinas used to work for MERALCO, in the Legal Department for the GM is also a lawyer.

In 2009, on MERALCO's 106th Anniversary, the late GM with IM Naranja, NMs Cabrido, Aguila, Lobigas and Cabellon were elevated to MERALCO Chess Hall of Fame.

Dec-23-10  asianwarrior: I know Torre reached the 2560 ELO points several times but I doubt if it ever happened in 1968

perfidious: <asianwarrior> The more so as the first FIDE ratings were only released in 1970.
Jan-02-11  rjsolcruz: I was corrected by Prof. Bobby Ang that the late Teodoro "Teddy" Aguila was not officially awarded the NM title.

Is it possible to give this posthumously? Also, this 2011, Meralco Chess Club is planning to do another edition of the Balinas Memorial. However, the extent or magnitude depends on sponsors but a small club tournament with our sr and jr members plus some invited kiddy chesskolars is already a sure thing. This will be done after the first quarter of the year, after the MVP Olympics.

Maybe we can invite some of the late GM's friends and family in the opening ceremony in order to give where credit is due.
