offramp: White's next move will be the Queen sloping to her King's Rook the fifth with check.
Aug-14-14  waustad: Pop goes the weasel
Aug-14-14  Cheapo by the Dozen: I am reminded of the young man who was sitting in a park, reading "Of Human Bondage" while drinking some Coca-Cola. He heard a scream and ran toward the trouble. The problem turned out to be not that serious -- a younger child had fallen off a swing in an accident that looked worse than it was -- but it still took a few minutes to sort out.

By the time he got back to the bench, his book and Coke were both gone. Finally showing his own youth, he started to cry. When a passerby asked him what was wrong, he replied plaintively:

"I've lost my Maugham and pop!"

Aug-14-14  Cheapo by the Dozen: Why the rush to play Ba2, which indeed turned out to be a lost tempo?
Aug-14-14  Once: The black pawns on c6 and d6 strongly suggest that black is going to play d5 at some point.

When black does play d5, white is either going to have to play exd5, giving up his strong point on e4, or retreat the bishop.

So white decides to move the bishop straight away. Don't think of it as a tempo wasted - it is more of a necessary move played before it is forced. He is going to have to move it anyway.

The only way for black to "punish" this is by playing Be6, as in the game. Then white would argue that he has exchanged his "bad" bishop for black's "good" one.

The other benefit of Ba2 is that white plays a move that he has to play before having to choose between competing moves that he might want to play. He is waiting to see what black comes up with first.

Aug-14-14  newzild: 27...b5? drops a piece. Black had to play 27...fg.
Aug-14-14  Tim Delaney: <newzild: 27...b5? drops a piece. Black had to play 27...fg.>

27. ... fg loses to 28. Qc4+ ... Nd5 (Qf7? Rh8+) 29. Bxd8 and white emerges a rook ahead.

Aug-14-14  Cheapo by the Dozen: OK, <Once>, that kind of makes sense, although I haven't checked to see what kind of commitment White managed to elude that way.
Aug-14-14  kevin86: The queen will mate in two!
Aug-14-14  Once: I don't think white avoids anything nasty. It's more of a pragmatic and practical move than anything subtle.

We later find out that white wants to attack on the kingside with h3 and g4. If that was his plan all along, he could have played for that straight away without Ba2. Then we might have seen this 8...Bf8 9. h3 d5

From here 10. exd5 is pretty icky, giving black a strong centre and threatening to play e4. So white will have to retreat the bishop anyway.

I'm not saying that 9. Ba2 is a great move. It's a matter of personal preference whether to play it now or later. It doesn't really lose a tempo because white is going to have to play it anyway and besides black also lost a tempo with 8...Bf8.

Aug-14-14  mruknowwho: Black might have castled a little bit earlier than he should have.
Aug-14-14  hscer: If Black didn't resign and White wanted to be a jerk about it: 30. Rh1+
