Sep-26-09  andymac: 28. Nxe7 looks OK, but either way, it's hardly a great game as White plays pitifully. I also just don't get why a 2400+ player would move Rd1... Why not just resign?

Check It Out: Could've been due to time pressure.
Sep-26-09  Gouvaneur: Ridiculous, this simply may not be a GOTD.
In my opinion both players played just bad.
The black exchanges on c4 did only favor white, Td1 is a cheap blunder, the exchange sac...well, interesting, but seriously not enough for a GOTD.

Natalia Pogonina: It's very nice to be featured on the GOTD. However, this game is far from perfect. We played it in blitz after a few hours of exhausting tie-break matches. Thus, please don't be surprised by the blunders - the tension was really high...
Sep-26-09  RandomVisitor: <Natalia Pogonina>Thanks for that insight.

34.Rc4? was perhaps the losing move, overlooking a knight fork, perhaps 34.Re1 was better.

Sep-26-09  millsms: Real stupid question because I am new to this. Why doesn't any of these games go all the way to checkmate?

Open Defence: <millsms: Real stupid question because I am new to this. Why doesn't any of these games go all the way to checkmate?> actually not a stupid question at all, at this level the players recognize when their position is lost so they dont play it out until mate
Sep-26-09  kevin86: It is a paradox that the better a player is,the more likely he is to resign-it's just a tradition of chess.

In virtually every other activity, players play to the finish-or you will be called "a quitter".

Sep-26-09  kevin86: An ugly finish-a onepenny pitfall.
Sep-26-09  PinnedPiece: An excellent example of one player seeing the board a lot better than the other.

At all levels, that's why there's a winner and a loser.

It's a fun game to try and "guess the move" because you just might come up with a better line than one of the two sides here!

Natalia, does anyone call you Pogo???

.

Sep-26-09  Primoman: The way kingscrusher explained the game in the video, I think this is a very good game. Great thinking Natalia, on a deep level to sacrifice the rook for a knight and deadly passed pawn structure. Nice win.
Sep-26-09  millsms: Open Defence: Thank you all for your response. I hope to begin to understand this game in full. Possibly the most complex and mentally satisfying game I have played yet.

Natalia Pogonina: <PinnedPiece> Haha, no, never. Sounds fun though, so you may be the first one to "officially" call me Pogo. :-)
Sep-26-09  kingsindian2006: <natalia> forget about the game, tell me all about chess kama sutra...cause ure a hottie...:)
Sep-26-09  Eisenheim: One has to respect blacks closed defense in which she was willing to trade down the exchange and later the ironic black knight invading to even it out. 39 Rd1 is just ugly - in contrast to the gracious, attractive defender. not really a GOTD though
Sep-26-09  achieve: <Pogo> Just read the CG Newsletter, and looking forward to you joining us at the Live Page for the upcoming Pearl Spring tournament!

And I like "Pogo" actually - though I feel more at ease at the moment with WGM Pogonina. ;)

Sep-26-09  JManRio: what a shame, going so well, then 34 Rc4 ??

Domdaniel: An excellent GOTD choice: an object lesson in the relative powers of rook and knight, and a reminder that winning the exchange is a long way from winning the game. White had chances after winning the exchange, but could never quite get a good position.

Is there an expectation that a GOTD should be a timeless classic? I'm happy with an interesting struggle, like this.

Sep-26-09  birthtimes: Yes, a nice struggle that Lasker would very much enjoy, and excellent penetration by a queen and rook combo to finish off in a mating net...
Sep-26-09  felixd: Wow, why is their game here? I could have play better than them...

First, the plan to win the exchange was just bad, it gave black very good counter-play.

Then, Rc4???? was just ridiculous.

Rd1 was bad, but in every single variation black was winning so let's not count it.

It still is a very bad game for both of them, but particularly for white.

Nice pun though.

Sep-26-09  felixd: Oh, sorry, I just read the comments above. If it was a blitz game well ok, it clarifies everything. And if in addition to that there were all the tension of a tie-break match, I need to apology.

But I do think that blitz games should not (except from rare exceptions) be the ''Game of day''.
