Oct-06-09  Keith Dow: Dear Think,

"Technically, Macs are PCs - PC just means personal computer."

Also Pc's often use the Intel microprocessor and Intel chip set while Mac's always do. The guts of both computers are pretty much the same.

Nice PC there :)

Oct-06-09  Bobsterman3000: Why would anyone want to use a Macintrash? the are no good.
Oct-06-09  kevin86: This does not compute...to be a good game.

Eggman: There is something aesthetically displeasing about the way Black plays his move and then resigns before his opponent can rely - I wish people wouldn't do that.

halito27: Friends don't let friends use Windows... ;-)
Oct-06-09  YouRang: Hey, I think this is one of the game/puns I proposed to cg.com :-)

However, I recall suggesting simply "PC vs. Mac", so they changed it a bit (an improvement, I think).

Oct-06-09  estrick: <Black plays his move and then resigns before his opponent can rely - I wish people wouldn't do that.>

White is, after all a 2500, while Black was a "mere 2290." Once Black saw that his last move, 33. . . . Kh7, neither saves his own bishop, nor allows him to capture White's bishop on h6, why keep playing? By immediately acknowledging defeat, he's just showing a little respect to the player who saw the position more deeply.

Phony Benoni: <YouRang> Great minds, and all that. I submitted one along this pun line as well.

I'm going to have to track the Pun Submmission List a little closer, so I can know when to stroke my ego.

Eggman: <<estrick>> It would hardly be disrespectful (or time consuming, etc.) to allow 34.hxg6+ Kxh6 35.Qh4+ (or whatever the continuation would have been) and to only then resign.
Oct-06-09  estrick: <Eggman>

What I was looking at was 34. Be3 which not only saves the bishop, but also threatens Black's queen, followed by 35. hxg6, which gives White two pieces for a rook, and more importantly, an overwhelming attack against Black's very exposed king.

If you're a master, as MacIntyre is, I'm sure the game looks completely lost, and he obviously didn't want to continue playing a hopeless position. It's just not fun.

That's probably the more important reason for resigning when he did, rather than to tip his hat to Charbonneau.

Oct-06-09  PhilFeeley: <Pc's often use the Intel microprocessor and Intel chip set while Mac's always do.> I thought Mac's used the Motorolla chips and PC's always used Intel...?
Oct-06-09  WhiteRook48: great attack from a Four Knights (?!)
Oct-06-09  screwdriver: Nice attack by white.
Oct-06-09  Steven87: <PhilFeely> That used to be true, though it's changed in recent times.
Oct-06-09  AnalyzeThis: White's King's knight was the star of this show.
Oct-07-09  AnalyzeThis: <Why would anyone want to use a Macintrash? the are no good.>

Tell that to anybody who runs a business involving photography, desktop publishing, web design, etc.

Eggman: <<Estrick>> Who's talking about playing on in the position? If 34.Be3 is the move that Black is expecting (34.hxg6+ seems simpler to me, but they both win), then just wait a second (or 3 minutes, or whatever) for the move to be played, and *then* resign - that's all I'm saying. In addition to competing, the players are creating a work of art together, and the last punch before a player capitulates should come from his opponent - that's just good artistry.
Oct-07-09  estrick: <Eggman>
I would agree with your point about artistry if this game had been played in a GM event with only one game per day.

However, it was a Swiss system event with many games played in a condensed period of time.

If I'm MacIntyre and play 33 . . . Kh7, and then notice that it doesn't do any good as soon as I take my hand off the piece, I say "You win, I resign" and move on to get ready for the next round.

At this point we're just debating different opinions of chess ettiquette, and I don't think there's a definitive answer. Different players will do what ever they're accustomed to doing when they get into this situation.

Oct-08-09  Keith Dow: Dear PhilFeeley: <Pc's often use the Intel microprocessor and Intel chip set while Mac's always do.> I thought Mac's used the Motorolla chips and PC's always used Intel...?

You are way behind the curve. Mac dumped Motorola a long time ago. They also dumped IBM and Motorola a few years ago for Intel.

Oct-08-09  Keith Dow: Dear Bobsterman3000: Why would anyone want to use a Macintrash? the are no good.

=====

Wow! A flash back to the eighties. Anyway, Microsoft switched to GUI interfaces a long time ago and now just makes crummy Mac clones. But that probably happened before you were born.
