 | | James D Flynn: I believe there is a mate after 18.Qxd8+ Nxd8 19.Rxd8+ Bf8 20.Rxf8+ Kg7 21.Rf7+ Kh1 22.Bg7+ Kg8 23.Rxe7# or 21…..Kg8 22.Bh6 and the only defense to 23.Rf8# is 22…..Be6 after 23.Bxe6 there is no longer a defense to Rf8# |

Apr-16-12
 | | Memethecat: 17...Rd8??? Nice way to deal with the Sicilian, not seen it before. Just checked Opening Explorer & there's only 74 games in DB at 4.cxd4, with 73% wins for white. |
 |
| Apr-16-12 | | VincentL: "Very Easy".
I see this instantly.
18 Qd8+ mates (almost !)
The full line is 18. Qd8+ Nxd8 19. Rxd8+ .
Now 19.....Ng8 20. Rxg8#
Or 19....Bf8 20. Rxf8+ Kg7 (Ng8 21. Rxg8# as above). 21. Rcxc8+. Now Nxc8 22. Rg8#. So
21....Qc8 (otherwise 22. Rg8#) 22. Nx8 Rxc8 23. Rf7+ Kh8 24. Red7 and white has a material
advantage of 2B + N.
This last line is way beyond Monday level.
Let´s see if I missed something easier. |

Brain Dispenser was right. |

 | | WinKing: Another queen valiantly sacrifices herself.
18.Qxd8+ Nxd8
19.Rxd8+ Bf8 <(19...Ng8 20.Rxg8#)> 20.Bh6 <(or 20.Rxf8+ or 20.Rcxc8 or 20.Nxa8)> Choose the flavor you like they all lead to victory. |
 |
| Apr-16-12 | | desiobu: Maybe black was frustrated and wanted to take the initiative somehow? |
 |
| Apr-16-12 | | Oxspawn: Too easy?
18. Qxd8+ Nxd8
19. Rxd8+ Ng8
20. Rxg8++
Nothing much to think about. Down the road; turn right and carry on until you meet a naked king. |
 |
Apr-16-12
 | | dzechiel: White to move (18?). Material even. "Very Easy."
So..., it looks like
18 Qxd8+ Nxd8 19 Rxd8+ Bf8
is in order. White can pick up additional material with 20 Rxf8+ Kg7
giving white a rook and two minor pieces for the queen. I don't see a checkmate beyond that, but it might be hiding in there somewhere. Time to check the kibitzing. |
 |
| Apr-16-12 | | Oxspawn: O Good, there is something to think about:
18. Qxd8+ Nxd8
19. Rxd8+ Bf8
gives the King an escape square.
20. Bh6 B(c8)e6
21. Rxf8+ Qxf8
22. Bxf8 Rxf8
23. Bxe6
and white has a rook a bishop and two knights left against a rook and a knight, and is threatening Rc8.
Did I get lost there somewhere? |
 |
| Apr-16-12 | | hugogomes: White ends up 2 rooks and 2 knights ahead! This could be a friday puzzle to find the best continuation.
20. Rxf8, Kg7 (only move)
21. Rf7+, Kh8 (only move)
22. Bh6!, Be6 (only move)
23. Bg7+, Kg8 (only move)
24. Bxe6, Qd6 (only move)
25. Rxe7+, Qxe6 (only move)
26. Rxe6, Kxg7
27. Rc7+, Kh6
28. Nxa8 and black can now MAYBE think of resigning |

| Apr-16-12 | | dragon player: It's monday, which means a queen sac:
18.Qxd8+ Nxd8
19.Rxd8+ Bf8
20.Rxf8+ Kg7
21.Rf7+ Kh8
22.Rxe7
Winning a lot of material for the queen, and the c8-bisshop is lost either. Time to check.
-------------
Indeed right. Maybe there's a mate, but this is winning. 1/1 |
 |
Apr-16-12
 | | gawain: I was certainly too hasty in proclaiming a back rank mate. But Black has to give up too much material to stave off the mate. 17...Rd8 still merits a Yikes! |
