Jul-22-09  LIFE Master AJ: The game is now posted, for those who would like to look.
Jul-23-09  kurtrichards: I wonder if Ivanchuk authored or co-authored a book in chess. I know Shirov had his "Fire on Board" and some DVDs.
Jul-23-09  LIFE Master AJ: <kurtr> I don't think Ivanchuk has ever written a book.
Jan-09-11  jmactas: I submitted "The B52s" as a pun submission.

  AylerKupp: <<jmactas>: I submitted "The B52s" as a pun submission.>

I must be tired but I just don't get it. Please explain it.

Jan-14-11  jmactas: <AylerKupp> The B52s are an American rock band and the ECO code for this game.
Jan-14-11  anandr: What if white plays 25.Nc2?
Jan-14-11  blueofnoon: Then 25...Rxc2 and white is down a knight.
Jan-14-11  GilesFarnaby: As already pointed out, it wouldn´t have been that bad for Ivanchuk to accept the sacrifice:

N against B with only 1 pawn majority in each flank is theoretically drawn, so if Vassily can just simplify stuff...

Aniara: The B52 is also a strategic bomber used by the U.S. Air Force.

AylerKupp: <jmactas>,<Aniara> Well, I knew about the B52 rock group (“Love Shack”, “Rock Lobster”) and the B52 bomber. I even tried to make an association between “bombs” and “pins” (so prominent in this game) but I couldn’t. But ECO=B52=Sicilian, Canal-Sokolsky (Rossolimo) Attack. It never occurred to me! Thanks.

  shakespeare: 16. c5 seems to be the mistake, the catastrophe builds up 16. Nxc6 bxc6 17.cxd5 Nxd5 18. Nxd5 cxd5
and white remains with a slight advantage
Jan-14-11  mack: I suspect <tpstar> will be turning up any minute with a bit of Fritz + 'Private Idaho' analysis.

tpstar: <mack> Get out of the state, get out of the state you're in

Credit this one to <jmactas>. I submitted a B52 game into the Pun Contest using this title, but it was a different game and didn't make the Top 30.

sevenseaman: Primal ferocity, no prisoners! I love it when Shirov is in that kind of mood.
Jan-14-11  starkidaway: What was the whole point of 16. c5? Why not just 16. Nxc6?
Jan-14-11  jon01: B52 is a cocktail as well, which has to burn while drinking.
Jan-14-11  jmactas: <jon01> I could pretend that's what I had in mind, but I had in mind the band when I submitted the pun. Your idea is a ton better considering the title of Shirov's book.

Medieval Knight: I'm still not clear what's wrong with 25. Nc2? blueofnoon says white loses a knight with 25..Rxc2

What does black do after 26. Qxb6?
26..axb6 loses to 27.Rxd5
26..R5xd2 27.Rxd2 or
26..R2xd2 27.Rxd2 Now what?

What am I missing?

  Sastre: <Medieval Knight> After 25...Rxc2 26.Qxb6 Rdxd2 27.Rxd2, 27...Rc1+ 28.Kf2 axb6 is winning.

  Medieval Knight: Thanks Sastre!
Jan-14-11  Penguincw: Wins with black are rare at this high level of play I'm assuming.
Jan-14-11  WhiteRook48: nice! 25 Qe4 Rxd4! 26 Rxd4 Nxd4 and white cannot take back. 27 Qxd4 Rc1!! 28 Qxb6 (28 Kh1 Qxd4 29 Rxc1 or 28 Rxc1 Qxd4+) 28...Rxd1+ 29 Kf2 axb6
a nice one by Shirov!
