jessicafischerqueen: Why are 1800 players paired with GMs in this tournament?

I understand what a Swiss Tournament is- I'm assuming this is one?

And "Open" tournaments everyone gets a shot etc.

But there is a section for Duffers and Beginners surely?

Why isn't this guy and the other Canadians who got slaughtered on day one playing in their own Baby section?

This is just embarrassing to Canadian chess fans.

Ridiculous.

A. Canadian chess fan.

Domdaniel: Hey ... *I* had a rating around 1800 last time I played a GM. I lost, of course.

Various tricks such as *accelerated pairing* are used to try to keep the two tribes apart, but it's largely dependent on the total numbers of each.

Travis Bickle: I believe Irina is still an IM and not a GM Jess. She needs I think two more norms to reach the GM Title. On the old World Chess Network (now defunct) Irina was a frequent participant. Irina played Banter Chess on the site usually with GM's, (banter chess were 25 minute rapid games where the two players would talk out there moves and ideas so the audience could read the comments and learn. She also played 2 minute blitz games with us members in what the site called Master Challenge. I played her several times. She was very personable and even had her own two hour slot on Friday nights on WCN. I miss her sense of humor and personality. Here is a short clip of Irina.

Domdaniel: <Jess> There's also the economic explanation. (I don't know if anyone has come up with a post-Soviet neo-Marxist analysis of the surplus labor value of GMs ... )

Sponsors are hard to find these days. So you invite ten GMs, including a couple of superstars, pay their expenses and maybe a bit more. Then you charge a couple of hundred bucks - quids, euros, whatever - entry fee to everyone else. It's amazing how many 1800 types will pay hard cash for a chance of a pop at a GM.

Anyhow I *like* these one-sided games, except when I'm the victim. They serve as a reminder of just how much titled players see at the board.
