offramp: Brains are not eaten. They are drunk.
Jan-08-14  morfishine: This game is just another weary example of neglected development and is hardly worthy of GOTD
Jan-08-14  whiteshark: Wohl's ♔ found dead in the middle of the board.
Jan-08-14  Gouvaneur: @morfishine:
If you argue that way, then none of Morphy's games are worthy of GOTD. And actually, no game with a gambit-opening is worthy of GOTD. I really liked Spike Ernst playing in a "geometric" way, swinging the Queen from e1 to b1 to h7. Amateurs like me only see the direct tactics and conclude that we would've also seen that. But a master's game is more than tactics being exploited, it's about creating the possibilities for those tactics to occur.

I thought it was <Spike> as well!

Jan-08-14  MelvinDoucet: g4-g5 seriously? I used to play like this when I was a complete beginner and would get literally blown off the board by the computer. I got much better results after I started playing more solidly so I can't believe some people make it to master level with such silly plans. - Black's problem was not their development; they just messed up their own kingisde creating a deadly weakness on h7 which eventually cost them mate.

FSR: Surely Black should have played 12...Bxg2 while he had the chance.
Jan-08-14  thegoodanarchist: <morfishine: This game is just another weary example of neglected development and is hardly worthy of GOTD>

True enough, but I love the pun and other folks probably do too.

I doubt there is a spec with the exact metric for what percentage of what goes into the decision, but I would have to think that pun quality ranks right up there with actual game quality when the GOTD choice is selected.

Jan-08-14  morfishine: <Gouvaneur> You are right, I shouldn't voice my displeasure without offering an alternative. IMHO, a "Game of The Day" should be a high quality game, with high tension and brilliant play from both sides. The goal would be a game that is instructive and results in our admiration.

Too often, a "play on words" or pun is created referencing one of the player's names, and then "fitted" to the game, without hardly any consideration to the quality of the game itself. The net result is then showcased under the banner "Game of the Day", which, IMO, ends up being for the most part, farcical.

<CG> should show a GOTD for what it should be: The Game of the Day

...and then have a separate game for puns, play on words and laughs

That sir, is my humble opinion

*****

<thegoodanarchist> You make a very good literal point thats in line with my opinion on what should or should not qualify as "Game of the Day": The pun is irrelevant: Its the quality of the game that matters

WannaBe: Kudos to the submitter. Too bad, the game did not take place in Georgia, but in Netherlands, instead. =))
Jan-09-14  Bob Loblaw: I think this is a fascinating and complex miniature. <morfshine's> appraisal is superficial. It seems that 14. .... ♕b2!? was risky, but it turns out the pawn wasn't poisoned, which I will demonstrate later. The best move appears to be 14. ..... ♕d4! when after the obligatory 15. ♔h1 instead of the tempting 15 ... ♘g4?, which is forcefully met by 16. ♕e2 ♕b2 17. ♘f5! g6 18. ♕g4 with a strong kingside attack! black has 15 ... ♘c6 16. f5 ♗c4 17. ♘hf3 (17. ♘c4 ♕c4 18. e5 ♘e5 19. ♘e5 19. ♖f4 ♕c5 20 ♗a8 ♖a8 and black seems to have the edge in a sharp position) 17 ... ♕c5 18. ♘c4 ♕c4 19. e5 ♘g4 20 ♕d2 ♖ae8 with chances for both sides.

<melvinDoucet> heaps scorn on 18 .... g5!? The engines are much more charitable giving lines that lead to unclear positions after it. Wohl's crucial mistake was 23 .... g4? Instead, he should have played 23 .... gf 24.gf} and then 24 ... ♘c6 or 24 .... ♕e3 with chances for both sides.

Jan-10-14  kevin86: A quick mate.
