Nov-22-09  zanshin: Good job Darwin! Good luck with the tie-break tomorrow.
Nov-22-09  zanshin: Critical point in the game was White's <25.g4!>

Best defense may be the immediate <25...Bc8> (or ...hxg4). Instead, Black played Bb7 first, followed by Bc8. If this is an accurate move score, then it's close to an admission that Bb7 was a wasted tempo. But by the time it was played, Laylo had a decisive advantage because he had time to play g5.

[+1.00] d=18 25...hxg4 26.hxg4 (0:59.28) 183565kN ...

[+0.69] d=16 25...Bc8 26.Rc6 (0:14.14) 43584kN

Eyal: Navara is a very uneven player. As Nigel Short said after Navara's collapse against him in their game from Corus B (Navara vs Short, 2009): <David is a very erratic player; when he's good he's absolutely brilliant, but when he's bad... He tends to calculate everything, and what it means is that when you're in bad form, things go spectacularly wrong - sometimes you have to be a little more pragmatic.>

  Appaz: Good game from Laylo!

<I> would of course never have dreamt going into ♘vs♗, but Laylo cut the bishop of from where the action was, in the center and the kingside, and was sort of playing with a piece up parts of the game.

31.Qg5! was a worthy finish.

chessgames.com: We didn't intended to show a Navara loss on his birthday; it was just a fluke. Anyhow, losing a game this brilliant could be regarded as an honor.

Agree. I thought 25...Bb7 looked odd. The immediate ...Bc8 looked right to me.

Mar-27-17  Ironmanth: Sweet game! Happy birthday, GM Navara. Didn't get the pun until I read An Englishman's post; forgive me, Layla is only my fave R&R song of all time. Y'all be well today!
Mar-27-17  paavoh: A Darwin game with a promotion taking place could be titled "Origin of the Pieces".
