 | | zarg: Great effort by McShane, makes you wonder why he "stopped" developing with all that talent. |

 | | zanshin: Good effort Luke, but Carlsen is just too strong. |

 | | Ulhumbrus: 51 Bf3!! traps Black's Rook after which Black's King, Rook, Queen's bishop and d pawn all become targets and Black cannot hold the game any longer. |

 | | Gypsy: <56...e4 was a blunder. 56...g5 was necessary. Now white should win without difficulties.> Probably also not enough to save: 56...g5 57.hxg5+ Rxg5(say) 58.d7 Bxd7 59.Rxd7... and Black looks out of all tricks. |

 | | SetNoEscapeOn: Impressive resistance by McShane, but in the end Carlsen was once again just too much. I wonder how many points he is going to score in this tournament. |

 | | HeMateMe: For those who thought McShane and Howell were part of the "patzer brigade", I thought he put up a pretty goood fight here. Losing this type of position to MC is no great shame. |

 | | beenthere240: I'm still in awe of 47. Nc5. ...Rg3 was a nice try, but a later Bf3 locked it up. This game reminded me of how you don't always have to find the "best" move. You just need to see a plan that gives you a good shot at winning. As if it were that easy. |

56...g5 57.hxg5+ Rxg5(say) 58.d7 Bxd7 59.Rxd7... and Black looks out of all tricks.> 56...e4 was indeed an unsuccessful "trick" that unnecessarily gave up a pawn - probably McShane figured he was ok after 57.Bxe4 Re3, and missed 58.Bd5!; but at the end of the 56...g5 line (with Black to move): click for larger viewIs White's win really so easy and obvious? |

Dec-09-09
 | | kb2ct: <Eyal: Honza Cervenka: 56...e4 was a blunder. 56...g5 was necessary.> Carlsen obviously knows he has the wrong color bishop for the h-pawn which makes the e-pawn the only possible drawing chance. Unfortunately the e-pawn gets blocked and falls. It might take 20 moves, but it falls. :0) |
 |
| Dec-09-09 | | kamalakanta: <Eyal> Doesn't White win by activating his King? (bringing it towards e4, and going after the e5 pawn)...? |
 |
| Dec-09-09 | | chillowack: <keypusher: 47.Nc5 is coming to about a million chess books near you.>
I agree, this will go down as one of the great moves of chess. Worthy of Kasparov! |

 | | MrMelad: It takes two players to make a great game, McShane was having a very strong game its just that Magnus, out classed Rybka, GM commentators and kibitzers. |

 | | alexirc: Why is 47. Nc4 such a good move? Pardon the basic question, but I am still learning |
 |
| Dec-09-09 | | Jason Frost: <alexirc> Mainly just because it activates the otherwise poor looking knight, allowing it to get to a great square. Defiantly a pretty looking move, I don't see quit how it's one of the <great moves of chess>, but it should definantly find puzzle books based soley on Carlsen's games, and maybe some others. The point, which makes it looks nice, of course, is that the Knight jumps on a square, twice defended by black, and yet can't be taken, <47. Nc5! Qxc5 48. Qe6+ > <47. Nc5! dxc5 48. Bc4 >(with the threat of 49. d6+ winning) |

 | | kb2ct: <alexirc: Why is 47. Nc5 such a good move? Pardon the basic question, but I am still learning> The knight is immune and white gets in Ne6
47. Nc5 dxc5 48. d6 Qg7 49. Bc4+ |
 |
| Dec-09-09 | | apiana: it is such a great move because black cant take on c5, or following might happen:lets say qxc5, qe6+, now king nowhere to go but g7 followed by qe7+, kh8, qxe8+, kg7, rf7 mate |
 |
| Dec-09-09 | | apiana: no not possible first dxc5, followed by d6, which openes up the line for the bishop just to correct the statement above. |
