ROFL
(Sorry CG, just goofing around! Happy Birthday!) |

 | | sallom89: <OneArmedScissor: Wow... someone at the tournament just told me Carlsen picked up the black king and threw it across the room in a fit of impotent rage. What's going on with this kid?>
LOL |

 | | virginmind: congratulations david howell! |
 |
Dec-10-09
 | | technical draw: Howell: "I can give anyone exchange odds and at least draw" |
 |
Dec-10-09
 | | plang: <Well done Howell, really well done. After grinding out a win against Short, he ground out a draw from a lost position> It was McShane who beat Short but I realize that all English look the same. |
 |
Dec-10-09
 | | whiteshark: Carlsen is slightly weakening. |
 |
Dec-10-09
 | | beenthere240: I agree -- I don't think Carlsen "blew it" -- I think he went for the win of the exchange and figured that with the time problems Howell couldn't survive. But he did and with a really gutsy performance. |

<Ra3 I disagree with this move. I would have played 40... Rc1 to get rid of the Rook. This would have simplified the position and cut down the drawing chances for White.> Interesting. <40...Ra3> was the top Rybka move (d=18) ;-) <70. Rf7 Now Howell has strong drawing chances. This game was nearly in the bag for Magnus back around move 40.> |

 | | Ulhumbrus: <Caissanist: <ulumbrus> thanks for the quote, I hadn't heard that before.> I suspect that it is more likely to be true in the middle game than in the ending. Perhaps in the ending such a central N is more likely to be the equal of a powerful bishop than of a Rook. |

Dec-10-09
 | | zarg: Great efforts by Howell! Didn't expect him to survive this. |
 |
| Dec-10-09 | | birthtimes: This will be the last time we see Carlsen not simplify to a rook vs. knight endgame in this type of situation... |
 |
Dec-10-09
 | | Domdaniel: Carlsen might have been more wary if he'd been on the receiving end of an exchange sac. 'Winning' the rook with a fork made it look more winnable. |

<Ra3 I disagree with this move. I would have played 40... Rc1 to get rid of the Rook. This would have simplified the position and cut down the drawing chances for White.>> Interesting. She changed her initial comment then which was simply "40.Kxh4 Ra3 The position looks quite hopeless for Howell. I expect a resignation soon." |

 | | Landman: Someone mentioned the win of the Knight at move 52. I don't have an engine handy, but that looks like the move that threw the win away. 52...Ra2 53.Kg3 (Kh3?? Rh1+) Rg1 54.Kf4 Rf2+ 55.Kxe4 Rxg4+ 56.Kd5 Rxf5 57.Ke6 Re5+! 58.Kxf6 Rgg5 with an extra rook. |

Forgot the handle, but it is easy to look up. I agreed with his forced rook exchange proposal as being preferable over allowing g4 followed by Kg3-f4 (Rd1 first as Howell played) - from memory. |
 |
| Dec-10-09 | | TCS: Around move 40 after the mistake by Howell during time pressure I wrote 'A shame for Howell who battled well'. The rest of the game was a brilliant example of 'glorious grinding'. |

 | | HeMateMe: well fought game. Congrats to Howell. If MC threw a piece across the room, then he has a little growing up to do. Check that ego at the door, baby. |
 |
| Dec-10-09 | | arkansaw: Carlsen lost some of his hard-earned elo over a draw :( |

It proves nothing, you too can disagree with an engine suggestion. |
 |
Dec-10-09
 | | Kasputin: With the point system it's 7 points for Carlsen and 6 for Kramnik - interesting... |
 |
| Dec-10-09 | | zanshin: <This just proves she is not analyzing with a computer.> <boz> That is the point - it's an inside joke I have with <achieve> which I prefer not to discuss here ;-) |

 | | tpstar: After 52. Nf5:
click for larger view52 ... Ra2+ 53. Kg3 Rg1+ 54. Kf4 Rf2+ 55. Kxe4 Rxg4+ wins the Nf5. It is strange that Carlsen missed this forcing continuation, as the same idea had come up before earlier in the game, and this was the key reason why the Ph7 was indirectly defended (K to the h file leads to a Rook check skewering the Rh7). Maybe Carlsen was tired, or he was moving too fast in his opponent's time pressure. Great fighting spirit by Howell to earn a draw. |

No sense keeping the rooks on if you aren't going to use them. My style is to force a rook pair off.
