 | | Ulhumbrus: Nakamura sees probably no way to escape the checks and save his g7 pawn as well. The capture Qxg7 will gain White a passed f pawn. |
 |
Dec-12-09
 | | HeMateMe: Maybe the 'bots will find a 10 move line for white to have won the weak e pawn, or, for that advantage to be transferred to some other part of the board. |

 | | zarg: Good game. Looks like Carlsen dropped a pawn with 35. Kg1, or was there a point? |

 | | kb2ct: Perps are better than reps. They are easier for FIDE and the organizers to understand. :0) |

 | | chessgames.com: Thanks to everybody for stopping by today. We make switch over to the Short-Hua game in a few minutes, if it is still taking place. In either case we hope to see everybody back tomorrow morning for the next round of the London Chess Classic. See you then! |

 | | Ulhumbrus: < achieve: Am I seeing ghosts or is Magnus still affected by the Howell game? Naka played flawless though.> What does White do after 34...Rd4 instead of 34...Rd5? Then a move by the N allows ..Qd5. |

 | | Gypsy: Nice to see Naka playing this well! |

 | | tpstar: <chessgames.com> Thanks for the live broadcast. =) Rare to see Carlsen in serious time pressure.
After 38 ... exd5:
click for larger viewNow 39. Nxa5? is out due to 39 ... Qb4 trapping the Knight; the Nc7 covers e6 and e8 for now, and 40. Qe5 is met by 40 ... Qxa5 covering the Nc7. <vonKrolock>'s suggestion of 38 ... cxd5 may lead to better chances, as the same trap is on, yet in mutual time pressure Black may have just went for the safest line. Psychologically, it must have felt good connecting the weak Pe6 to his other Pawns. :-) |

 | | boz: First time in the tournament Carlsen didn't achieve a winning position on the board. |
 |
Dec-12-09
 | | ajile: I don't like 39..dxc4. Why give up this nice pawn chain? Black should have just moved the Nc7 or protected it and give up the a5 pawn. Black retains better winning chances with the centralized protected passed pawn. |

 | | carmen: Why not 33.Nb3? Can someone analyse that? |
 |
Dec-12-09
 | | carmen: Maybe the biggest mistake by Carlsen was letting Nakamura place his pawn at a5? |

 | | Eyal: <What does White do after 34...Rd4 instead of 34...Rd5? Then a move by the N allows ..Qd5.> It seems that White can equalize here by 35.Nf3. 35...Rxa4?? loses to 36.Qd1 with the double threat of Qxa4 and Qd8+/xc7; moving the rook on the d-file is met by 36.Rd1; and after 35...Qd5 36.Kg1 Rd3 (36...Rxa4 is bad again, because of 37.Rd1) 37.Ne5 Black doesn't seem to have anything better than taking the draw by repetition with 37...Rd4 38.Nf3 etc. (37...Rd2 might get dangerous after 38.Qh5 g6 39.Qg5 - keeping an eye on Rd2, so ...Qxc5 to defend e7 is unplayable). |

 | | Ulhumbrus: After 16 ...a5 there could be an alternative to 17 Nc5 and that is 17 Ng3, but for the fact that Black has then 17...Bc2. This suggests 17 Rac1 preventing ...Bc2 in reply to Ng3, and getting the last piece into play. White is then three moves ahead of Black in development and Black is close to having a lost game, if he is not in fact lost. |
 |
| Dec-12-09 | | Oliphaunt: 19.Bxd5 Nxd5 20.Nc4 looks pretty strong with ideas such as Nd6 and/or Qg3+Bh6. I think white has at least a small edge here. |

It is still allowed to seek for causes for things that does not turn out the way you want. As a matter of fact that's the smart thing to do. Take it as a free advice. |

| Dec-12-09 | | Oliphaunt: <veigaman> I think it's a good move. Qxb7 seems to be playable, but black can still reply with....Nab4. |
 |
Dec-12-09
 | | veigaman: <oliphaunt> qxb7 seems more natural, may be magnus thought that naka had prepared sth and he avoided it. However, i dont have the level to ensure that it was right or wrong:) |
